Gas prices will eventually go up. Its a matter of economics and monetary policies.

Inflation, CPI, and the scarcity of oil will escalate prices even furthur. Gas prices have more than doubled (in canada) within the ten years and it will continue along that trend.

The entire world is so dependant on oil, and in order for it to go down in price, would be to find alternate fuel sources and mass promote it. This won't be happening all too fast as..... I'm not giving up my 4Runner for a long time.
 
The link has nothing to do with gas prices. Basically it says if you add couple ounces to your gas tank, it will increase your fuel economy by 15 to 35 percent. Guess you didn't clicky clicky. :p Check it out tho, it's some pretty interesting stuff.
 
I work in a scientific contract lab, I will ask about this Acetone. I am an accountant so I don't know... will post later
 
I wouldn't try it in your 4Runner

If you look at the composition of Acetone (CH3COCH3) vs the composition of common gasoline (C8H18), you may get some nasty effects on the catalytic converter if you over mix, and who knows what the effect would be on the Oxygen sensor. Acetone is very volatile, and if memory serves correctly will combine readily with water vapor to reduce the effectiveness. Also, ever see any acetone (or nail polish) in petroleum based bottles? Acetone should dissolve the pertroleum based rubber gaskets, seals and hoses in your fuel system, and the long term effect on the fuel filter could let little pieces of foam or paper flow into your injectors.

Just me, but realistically getting 1-3 MPG better to have to replace components on your fuel system seems backwards.

After working in Chemistry labs and genetics labs for many years, I can tell you that given the right amount of money, you can prove anything in a lab environment, but that doesn't mean it will work outside of that lab.
 
I work for a chemical lab. Acetone dissolves many rubber compounds. It also makes some types swell twice their size. I don

Gas relative to inflation and income levels is still cheap....hardly worth throwing weird crap in your $40K vehicle's gas tank.
 
Kewl read, but I personally wouldn't put it in my truck. Its a Toyota that will last forever (well longer than a piece of crap Ford), and I don't want to change that...

It would be a very interesting experiment. Something to do on an old clunker vehicle, certainly not a new T4R. I just might try it in my 1990 Corolla. I use liters of acetone every month, at work. 3 oz/10gal would not destroy anything, for a short term test.

Maybe you'd better tell us about it, like how they justify statements like: "You might gain 15 to 35-percent better economy from the use of acetone. Sometimes even more."

I am a woodworker, not a chemist, but I have played with acetone a lot. Interesting idea. They also say that propane is a better fuel...I don't really agree as propane-fired engines do not generally give any better mileage and a bit less power, tho they do run cooler and seem to last longer.

I wonder about the magetic things you put on your fuel lines? They claim similar things.

For this kind of gain tho, there are a lot of other ways to increase mileage too. Tire choice and sizing, rolling resistance, lubrication, air intake and exhaust gas scavaging tricks all have effects. I gained 2 mpg on my old Ford by removing the tailgate.

I think I would try to optimize these things first, then look at chemical tricks. There are a lot of reasons why gasoline is not the "best" fuel out there and every engine system is a compromise.

If anyone wants to try this, pleae post what happens! I would like to know.
 
Iowa4runner.....I never said we were going to get 15% out of our 4runners, and if you think that our 4runner engines are running at top effeciency you are mistaken. I'm not saying that we should all pour acetone in our tanks. It was just a very interesting article I came across, and thought you guys might enjoy a good read, especially with our rising gas prices. Also, I'm not trying to argue about if our gas prices are too high. It's just an interesting read and that's it.

Well... it is an interesting article, albeit a very questionable one. The bottom line is that it can't be a "possible solution for our gas price woes" when modern EFI vehicles do such a good job of mixing fuel and air already.
 
Well as far as I know, there has never ever ever ever been anything aftermarket that could improve gas mileage. Only a light foot and keep it well maintained.
