hi guys, great forum you guys have here, i've been reading for the past 3 months, truly impressed by the in-depth and technical information on this forum. I looking to by a sports v6 4x4 before 2006, and i noticed that most (all the se i've seen, actually) have the spoiler already installed before the dealer put them on display. is it possible for me to uninstall them? would it leave any holes where the wires for the break light go connect??? i know, spoilers are suppose to be a good thing, they cost extra, but i like the clean, rugged look of the t4 tale without it.. thanks for your time and any possible input.

I believe it is possible. But you would need to have the tail gate patched up and re-painted. Keep looking around. I got my wife 4runner sport without the spoiler. That is not something I would want to hassel with.

if you take off the spoiler you won't have a 3rd brake light like the hatches that come w/o a spoiler do. there'll be an indent where the brake light would be on the hatch. i say it's too much hassle, and you should find one w/o a spoiler. good luck! 
thanks, trance. i'll keep on looking, no rush, i'm looking to buy just before the 2006 model comes out, so i'll be in a position to demand hefty discounts...unless i can get a fair deal now...which leads me to my next question, i'll probably be buying 2 vehicles at once, both toyotas, one 2005 avalon and one 2005 (or 2006) 4runner, think i can walk in and demand both for LESS than invoice with 2 purchaes in my arsenal??? i'll post in a new thread.

I can see why you don't like the spoiler they put on the 05 runner. but it you see the 30-04 factory spoiler you probably like it better/??

It has to have some function or else the Toyota Corporation would not have put it on the trucks.
Ooops! I take the above statement back. There is this "non-functional" hood scoop thingy that Toyota has been installing on the Ravs, Tacomas, and oh yeah.....the Sport Edition 4Runners.
Hmmm........I am wondering why you haven't stated any displeasure about the goofy looking, non-functional hood stoop on that new sport edition model you are thinking of buying. It has to create some sort of drag effect also.

you read my mind, you really did on this one. The hood scope does NOT make the 4runner look better....except from the side, but from the front, or from the 3o'clock direction, the regular sr5 or limited hoods make the hood of the runner look longer, which is a good thing, almost like an american muscle car in a way. but the hood scope visually take length away from the hood scope, it interrupts the way the lines of the hood reflects light off of it, so it "looks" shorter.... and it does add drag effect, but, for the x-reas and larger breaks, i think it's worth it. i might just get an aftermarket carbon hood if i get my sports. i'm not against the spoiler, just thinks it looks cleaner without it, looks good with it too, just looks better (in my humbel opinion) without.
Koz, so the air flow would add downward force to the rear tires for added traction? or does it just "clean" my rear window? I used to like the last generation JGC (don't ask), and Jeep had that option for the Grand Cherokees, theirs just allegedly clean the dust off of the rear window with airstream. I really would not pass up a good deal if i can find one; so if it's with a spoiler, than i guess i'll just have to take it. at least it's the truck i like; although i really do think i can have it uninstalled and just patch it up afterwards.

Have the dealer swap the tailgate
Your dealer should be able to swap the tailgate with a non-sport model of the same color if you truly don't like the looks of the spoiler. There is nothing "Sport" specific about the tailgate that (i.e. emblems or trim pieces) that would not let it fit an SR5 or Limited.

I have a 2005 SE and it does not have the spoiler. The dealer didn't have the truck in his inventory but swapped a local dealer. I wanted galactica grey and they found one. No moonroof,std sound system, I wanted DRL and garage opener and didn't get either. Added garage door opener. At least here in east you can get SE without spoiler.
