Possible V8 on 5th Gen?

i was messing with the toyota.com website and i noticed that when i click for V8 trucks & suvs, the 5th gen is highlighted. is this trying to tell me something about the future for the truck? or maybe im just crazy. take a look. hopefully they put the 4.6L V8 in it, so it can go past its original roots as toyota claims!

Under the hood, the big news is that the previous 4.7-liter V8 goes away. When you consider that this significantly refreshed 4.0-liter V6 offers 10 horsepower more than the V8, you might not miss it so much.

This DOHC 24-valve 3,956cc V6 has variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust cams, and it produces 270 hp at 5,600 rpm and 278 pound-feet of torque at 4,400 rpm. It delivers pretty good fuel economy for its power output, an EPA-rated 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway/19 mpg combined for this 4Runner 4x4. The two-wheel-drive version of the V6-powered 4Runner is rated at 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway/19 mpg combined.:happens:

I think a V8 will definitely be back in the 4runner within 2 years. It doesn't make a ton of sense to not have one.

And 50 ft-lb less torque, which is what you really notice when accelerating at typical speeds. Add in the 400 extra pounds with the less torque and I think I will miss it. YMMV.

I'm sure it's possible we see an optional V8 at some point with the new 4R, but I think it was just a glitch in their build-your-own-vehicle tool. The downloadable PDF brochure makes no mention of a V8, or the 4-banger we kept hearing about for that matter. Looks like it will just be the V6 in the states for a while.

That is comparing peak to peak. At a particular RPM, it is between 25 and 50.

I read that the 0-60 time on the 2010 4x4 is 8.2 seconds. Anybody know what the 0-60 on the 04 4Runner 4x4 v8 was (before they upped the horsepower in 05)?

19MPG combined is pretty damn good too btw. My 3400lb V6 Altima only got 21-22mpg

I am sure the new Lexus GX will have a V8, to help differentiate it more from the 4Runner. If they really do get rid of the side opening rear barn door and don't make it too "soft" (i.e. soccer-momishish) looking, I may be interested. I almost got one when shopping for my 2004 Limited but didn't think the Lexus extras were worth the extra $ over the Limited.

I also agree with the posters who anticipate Toyota offering a V8 Runner either later in 2010 or 2011.

The problem with the GX is that it can easily run $53k -- not very far from a Land Cruiser.

If you're already paying $53-57 for a GX, the step from there to $65 isn't that big a percentage. Of course, we started at ~40-42 with the 4Runner. :sobbing:
