Possibly buying a '94....HELP!

Hey guys...I'm looking at trading my Dodge Ram Cummins Turbo Diesel truck for a '94 4Runner SR5 V6 5spd. I'm sick of working on my truck constantly, and have been searching for a reliable 4x4 SUV. The vehicles on my list were Suburban/Tahoe 4x4, Cherokee/Wrangler 4x4, or 4Runner 4x4.

Today I came across a very nice looking '94 Model. It's a dark green/bluish color, with blue interior. SR5, All power options. Everything works, all windows, locks, rear window, Heat & AC, radio, etc. The truck only has 129k miles, and very VERY clean. Carpet, Paint, Underbody, Upholstery all very nice condition.

It has Rancho RS5000 Shocks on all 4 corners, and that looks to be the extent of upgrades.

I've never owned a Toyota, but have always wanted one. My friend has a nice '93 4Runner 2wd and it's been really good to him.

I'm wondering what things I should inspect or look for on this vehicle before purchasing...as well as what problems this vehicle might encounter in the future.

This particular truck looks to be very well maintained, and taken care of. I'm really looking for a vehicle that gets decent fuel mileage, VERY RELIABLE, and can be taken Off Road occaisionally. I'd eventually like to build some trail bumpers for it, install a winch & lights, purchase a quality 3-4" lift and put it on some 33" tires.

at that mileage, things like belts, power steering pump, master cylinder, radiator, hoses, battery should be inspected to see if they are in good condition or have been replaced already. i had a '94 4runner before this one and didn't have many problems with it besides those things i mentioned. the power antennas are notorious for breaking on these things. check to make sure it goes up and down properly since it's not cheap to replace. try to get a carfax for it. check fluids for signs of mechanical failure, rust in the body/undercarriage. look for signs of odometer rollback, like are the pads on the pedal completely worn through? shouldn't be with 129k miles, but may be if it once had 250k miles. (i say this with experience). good luck with your purchase. btw: i still have the owner's manual, custom sunshade and a haynes repair manual for a '94 4runner if you're interested in picking all 3 of those things up for a good deal.

You will see a big diffrence in HP like 150HP/180TQ for the 3.0L going from a turbo cummins.

MPG about 14-16

They are very relaible like all Toyotas are

The power antenna IS cheap to fix and easy to do.

Make sure the head gaskets have been replaced under the recall that is the only problem with the 3.0L.

They are great trucks you wouild not be sorry.

Thanks guys...yeah I know about the power drop...my truck isn't stock and makes over 300hp and 800lbft at the wheels...also gets 22-23mpg on the highway. Problem is I'm sick of repairing a new problem every week. I want something I won't upgrade (excessively) and will be dependable and fun.
