Possibly in the market for a 4th Gen...

Hey guys. I currently own a 1999 Runner and recently started toying with the Idea of getting into a 4th gen...and wanted to know what to look out for regarding any potential issues... I am looking at this one;

V8 were awd or 2wd. No part-time 4wd.
Price seems good. pm me if you are interested in an 04 sport v8, it would be a bit more money.

if im hard on the gas i get around 16. If i baby it i get around 17.5-18.5. On a trip from North NJ to Wildwood NJ, i got 21. I am going by what the computer tells me and what it reads when i fill up. I reset the computer mpg calculator at every fill up.

not bad considering my 1999 V6 (Slug) averages 17mpg...anything I should look out for on these?

Timing belt. If you can't get real proof that they just changed it, figure on another $900-$1400. I bought mine with 101,000 on the odometer, and since there was no proof of it ever being done, I took it in the very next day. Turns out it was due for one like I suspected. You do not want to risk a timing belt issue. I was skeptical on the full time 4wd (not all wheel drive) but I have had no issues, nor have I read about any issues with this system. You just have to manually engage the center diff lock every so often to lubricate and exercise the system, just like you would any other 4wd. I get 17-18 calculated mpg on a regular basis. By the way, your digital mpg readout will always run about two mpg higher than actual on these 4Ruuners. Not sure why, but rule of thumb. Good luck.
