Possibly stupid question about replacing speakers (3rd gen)

Pardon me if this is a dumb question, I'm not real familiar with this stuff...

I just got a '97 4runner that doesn't have any sound from the front speakers, so I was wanting a relatively quick and easy way to fix that. Do I need to replace both the door speakers and the separate tweeters, or can I replace the door speakers with some that have built-in tweeters?

Hmmm. Is your system stock or aftermarket? If the front is completely silent, then you probably have a disconnected wiring harness at the amp, or don't have speakers installed at all. Check that all the wiring is connected before pronouncing the speakers DOA.

To clarify, it still has the factory head unit, and there is some faint sound with buzzing out of the driver's side door speaker. The passenger side is completely silent. The rear door speakers work fine.

The fronts might be dead. I replaced my whole system a couple weeks ago and found one replacement speaker in the drivers door. It eliminated the factory tweeter. You can put a 6.5 coaxial set in the fronts just fine

So...I went ahead and got a replacement set of component speakers and put them in and...still the same problem. I just have some faint sound with buzzing coming from driver side, and no sound whatsoever coming from passenger side.

I'm guessing that means the amp is the problem? If so, is it fairly easy to just replace the amp, possibly with one out of another 3rd gen 4runner? I'm on a tight budget, particularly since I just bought new speakers that it doesn't look like I needed in retrospect, so I'd love to figure out the cheapest way to fix this.

Thanks for any input (and I'm aware these aren't real exciting problems I'm having, so I do really appreciate the help from those of you who are much more familiar with this stuff than I am).

Either the head unit is blown, the amp is blown, or the wiring harness is shot. Sounds like the head unit or amp is to blame. Do you have the tape deck and CD player, or a different combination?
