Very Cool Drawer Systems in this thread. I recently been creating DIY Drawer Kits for the 3rd Gen, then a buddy of mine (who has a 5th Gen) asked about making one that secures to the cargo tray, allows full use of the tray (so you don't lose access to the rear cubby) and maximizing the depth of the cargo area. So I thought I'd share a pic of the CAD drawing here and see what people thought.

Any real world experiences with a 40" length drawer? Will it fit? I measured the distance from the rear seats to the edge of the cargo area and it looks like it's just at 40" if you have the rear seats in the upright positioned without it reclined.

Just finished these two drawers. 34" long. Each drawer is 18" wide and 5.5 inches deep. I bought two Goose Gear compression latches and I think it worked out sweet. I love them.

My storage and sleeping platform system.
Plywood, 2x4s, 3/4 inch pipes and fittings to support the edges. Height was selected for ease of sleeping and moving around, and to allow enough room underneath for storage.
One platform is always in the hatch area for everyday use and allows the back seats to be in place, with two plastic bins for gear slid underneath. Turnbuckles to hold down. Heavy duty carpeted.
Pull-out plywood table held up with bent aluminum runners.
With back seat bottoms removed for camping, and seat backs folded down, another carpeted plywood section can be attached up towards the center console box, also supported by 3/4 pipes and fittings to be level with the rear section. Allows two people to stretch out comfortably.
It’s simple, lightweight, and can be quickly removed. And no rattles.

It will not, unless you remove the seat back. I speak from experience.

Built my drawers a few years ago after getting lots of ideas from this and other forums. I wanted to keep the functionality of my sliding cargo tray and leave space for my fridge.

I put the drawer on the 60% side of the folding down seats and also built 2 removable pieces with fold down legs to make the drawer part of a sleeping platform. After taking a road trip around the country last year I decided that I wanted to maximize sleeping space inside for my next trip and removed the drawer, but I loved how it kept things out of the way and organized.

Anybody else have a single sided drawer setup? Saw a few in this thread, but wanted to see some more examples. I’m planning on doing a single sided drawer on the driver side and mounting a fridge with slide on the passenger side.

I had planned on building one eventually, but our 4Runner was broken into and I decided to just buy one. We leave all of our tools in the back and luckily they weren't stolen.

If you are thinking of going low end - this is about what it takes:
Carpet, padding and 2 sheets of 3/4" 4x4 plywood - $23 each.
(2) 2x8x8
(2) 2x3x8
Various turnbuckles, screws, staples.
Went with (2) tubs from Target instead of drawers - partly for weight, partly for ease.

Storage was pretty easy - used the usual tie downs with turnbuckles.
Removed seat cushions and sleeping platforms rest on the seat backs.
They were easy to build and annoying to figure out how to keep them secure and not shift/tip.

Storage Box - 53lbs
60% Sleep Side - 25lbs
40% Sleep Side - 17lbs

Love this setup. Just curious, where do the 2x8x8s fit in? Are they part of the sleep platform? Would you mind measuring then tubs from Target are?

2x8's form the base of the drawers.
I'm 6'3" and 230lbs - needed something substantial.
Plus 2x are cheap, easy to work with and available.
I could have gotten some more drawer room with 1x, but not as sturdy.
Plus didn't really need it if I was using tubs vice trying to maximize the area for drawers.
x8 I thought was a good compromise on height for drawers with easy to find tubs.

Tubs are $15 Target brand - Dimensions (Overall): 35.87 Inches (L) x 16.65 Inches (W) x 6.63 Inches (H).

Here is a picture of the underside in case you are confused. You'll see I also threw on a strap of thin aluminum I had lying around to further ensure the supports didn't move over time - probably not needed.

I'm pretty happy with this overall.

- I can get the drawers and tubs in and out in 2-3 minutes - loading up on mulch at Lowe's or getting big items is not a issue, just throw this in the garage for the day.
- Carpeting and padding - slept on this a few times. Sure I used a versa mat and a bag, but the extra padding was nice.

Easy Improvement - could have used carpet that matched the black interior and this would be almost invisible looking in the windows.
But that carpet cost 3x as much and I was being cheap.
As is, the grey doesn't really attract attention.

Built these off of the SolidWoodWorx plans online. After I get some more wood I’ll add in the side cubbies. They have first class customer service and their hardware package was top notch. Now I just need to fill the drawers up!

I've got two SKB short double rifle cases under a piece of plywood covered with "rubber" padding. Lots of storage room in the cases (with foam removed) and they are extremely sturdy. The covered piece of plywood hides the cases and pretty much looks like the "floor" of the cargo area especially at night.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, correct?

Got these in yesterday and heading to Home depot after work for some plywood.

Eventually, I might convert to this set up and move the cases to the roof rack.

Wow. Nice setup. I like the small trap doors to access storage there. As far as your fridge goes, how do you use it now if two people sleep in the back? I put my soft shell RTIC in the front passenger seat while sleeping in back but can’t figure out how to accommodate a larger fridge.

It will be very rare to have my wife and I will be sleeping back there, but I wanted the option just in case. If we both do have to sleep in there, I'll have to move it to the front passenger just like you. If we are using the cooler, I'll just put it outside.
