I don't know if Id spend time/money powder coating...if you spray can them you can touch them up when they look like sh*t after a few good scraps...unless you have a hook-up on the powder coating of course:becky:

Unner, as far as your skids go, I would recommend that you do not spend your money on powder coating. The skids are easy enough to paint. Find a spot where you can set up a 2x4 spanned across a couple of tree branches, a fence corner, etc. Hang the skids from some rope off the 2x4, and go to town with the rattle can. Alternately you can set up a table, and put a 5 gallon bucket on top, then the skid on top of the bucket. If you put the side that faces the undercarriage on the bucket you can paint the side facing pavement and most of the other side without flipping the skid.

I've only had to re-paint my skids once, but prior to repaint I had to beat them with a sledge to straighten them out. Despite the damage from the sledge and all the rocks, etc that I'd dragged them over, the finish was still in fair condition. I painted right over the rust that had formed the second time around. I use a good self etching primer and rattle can paint like Rustoleum Pro and they're good to go.

I totally agree with this. I used some self etching primer I had laying around, then went to town w/ some flat black rustoleum professional spray paint. A lot of it. I have some DEEP gouges/scratches in the paint, but have not gotten through to the metal yet... lol

I've thought about just painting them as well, but I can stuff powder coated for really cheap here though so I'll probably see what he wold charge to do the skids and if it's reasonable I think I'll get them powder coated and then touch up using a rattle can as needed. I had my sliders powdercoated for $40 and my full length rack done for $100. I figure the skids would probably run me ~$60 there.

I think silver looks the best on almost any truck.

Silver would contrast all of the black on the truck. Hmmmm.

As for paint, I paint them all with 2 coats of semi-gloss black POR-15.

Those are some very nice looking skids, not cheap at all.

Isn't the jaos akodi plate thin compared to a actually aftermarket skid plate ?

Thick compared to stock, thin compared to anything made for real offroading. As I said previously, it's just for looks, I wouldn't recommend it for anything more intense than a forest road.

Are those regular people prices, or do you know a guy that knows a guy? I need to paint my AO bumper soon and I'm moving up to Athens in December. I was just going to rattle can it (places here are looking like $2-300 for powercoating) but at that price powder coating might be worth it.

Got my skid plate off of some guy on Craigslist, said there was some guy on here a couple years ago that was fabbing up skid plates for members. Bolt holes aren't perfect, had to mess with those a bit and I need to get a hole cut for when doing oil changes, other than that it looks good and works good.

PS: My T4R is basically stock, but I didn't have a skid plate and I watched someone crack their radiator so I figured if I'm going to be doing any trail stuff, might as well have a little protection

Also, my bumper is uneven for some reason, and it really makes everything look cock-eyed. Anyone know how to level out a bumper? Lol

I have a 3/16" Skid Row Offroad skidplate, it's beat to shit, been bent completely the opposite direction in the past, but has saved my ass plenty of times. Gotta get a pic.

Normal pricing. I went by there one day on a whim after being quoted $300+ by another local powder coater for my sliders and he said he'd do them for $40 cash. They do mostly industrial stuff so I think anything I bring them is just kinda a small bonus. Since I've always gone with black the turn around is quick and I don't have to pay for him to run some special color. Athens is only about 15 minutes from me. Nice to have another member local soon.

The thing I like with the ShrockWorks ones are that they bolt to the factory tow hook location so they should be pretty solid. I just need to figure out if I can keep my shackles mounted there or if I need to wait until I get a bumper to mount the shackles upfront again.

Got them delivered today. Powdercoat guy told me $85 to have them done semi-gloss black like the rest of the stuff on my truck. I think I'm just gonna have him do them. This way it's got a solid coat as a base coat and I can just do touch ups as needed. Plus the forecast for this weekend is a lot of rain, not good for painting...

I'll update this again once I get them done and mounted.

$85 to powered coat is a good deal. I like the idea of a powered base, you can then touch them up with a rattle can. I feel the powered is a lot more durable.

When it comes to powder coating, it matters who is doing it. A "good" coater that cares about their final product will grind ugly welds/unsightly cast marks and clear coat their work. Don't go by price alone. Check out their work first. If they do a shitty job in the prep, the coating wont stick and will easily flake off (I have had some come off the plenum with just painters tape). I had a ton of powder coating done to my 3000GT and learned a lot from that. IF you are gonna go that route, make sure you chose a guy that cares about what he is doing. It will be better for you in the long run.

My guy is an industrial powder coater that does hand rails, and other very large items like that. They did over 1000 ft of hand rails just last week that's why I couldn't get into their schedule. They do great work and I get it for so cheap because the owner likes me and I keep coming back to him as well. They can just throw my stuff in with their other black too since I imagine most of their stuff is black. The sliders have held up great and so has my rack I had done there. I dropped the skids off on Friday of last week to be done in semi-gloss black like the rest of my stuff. I'm hoping they'll be done tomorrow and can be picked up!
