Potential 2002 buyer... Neep input fast!

I would pass if they're not willing to make that deal. The timing belt is gonna cost you $600 (or closer to $1000 at a dealer) alone. It better be in excellent shape to pay $12K+ IMO. You also have to ask yourself, what else did they NOT do on time along with the TB (they're already 17K miles past that recommended service).

I agree. The fact that the vehicle was leased out twice leads me to believe it may not have received the same TLC as if it were "owned." Did I miss why the current owner was trading in after 1 year? Any way you look at it, $12K is a premium price and better come as such-good condition and detailed service records. Maybe talk the dealer into come maintenance extras if you feel lucky.

The first one I looked at was leased, the second one I looked at today (2001) is a one owner.

It does have some service history that I found in the glove box, but just maint stuff like diff services, cooling system flush, brakes, tires, etc.

Its weird as the leased one looks cleaner than the 1 owner. Both are pretty clean though, I didnt see any evidence of rust or paint work on either. However the 2001 had a rub mark down to the primer on the drivers fender from the damn bug gaurd.

I called around on the 2002 (the initial one) and no delears have replaced the timing belt so that is still questionable. Apparantaly the owner did have it replaced, but where is ???

I believe the 2002 was traded in due to the prior owner wanted one a little bigger and traded into a 4th gen. She did only have it for a year, however she put 20k on it.

I dont know, both have there pros and cons:

2002 - 110k, Slightly better condition but doesnt have fender flares, leather, 3 owners (2 lease's), timing belt not done, may be less expensive and getting better trade-in
2001 - 107k, Anntena issues, pwr lock issues, drivers seat tear but does have flares, leather, one local owner, some maint history, but so far is more expensive and trade in is less

The deck is definately stacked against me as with the Nissan trade. Granted I only paid $22,200 new but I put new tires on it right after I bought it as well as a leveling kit and tow pkg. Basically into the truck $23,200 but I have had it for a year so I realize depreciation is a factor.

Are you 100% sure you want an 01 or 02?

If you get a 99 or 00, you can get it for cheaper, it will most likely be in just as good of condition, and you can get the better 4wd system and a rear locker...

That's what I'll be doing soon when I get my new 4Runner. I'm gonna swap all my stuff over and give my 3RZ to my mom, then sell her 95 Previa.

Doesnt have to be an 01 or 02, that is just what I've been finding with lower miles in my area. There are a few others, but they have a lot more miles on them.

My options are also limited as I am working with dealers since I have a trade. I would like to stick with the more reputable ones as they usually keep cleaner vehicles on their lots vs the smaller fly by night ones.

A '99 Limited would have the AWD feature in the 4x4 system (AKA center diff locker), but some have the rear locker as an option too. This would be ideal, but that isn't an easy truck to find for sale. BTW, rear lockers were available from '96-00..

-I would make them fix the locks as part of the deal.
.

Yea, after looking around it looks like that may be a bigger deal than what I initially thought. Sounds like it could be computer related? You press the button on both the drivers and passenger doors and nothing happens. Key fob, nothing happens Lock the drivers door from the outside with the key and all the doors lock.

Can you install a locker even with the center diff lock and AWD option? What about the factory E-locker?

I know with the Frontiers a lot of owners will find and swap out an entire M226 axle with factory locker (Nismo/Pro4x) into their base model Frontiers.

You can install an elocker (or any aftermarket locker) even in a 4runner that has the AWD option. What I was getting at earlier is, all '99 and '00 Limiteds came equipped with AWD, but some came with both AWD and elockers from the factory (which IMO are even more desireable than the Highlander/Sport editions since the H/S editions don't have the AWD feature). People love the hood scoops on the Highlander/Sports (which the Limiteds don't have), but I would much rather have the AWD feature than a hood scoop that's just for looks anyways.

AFAIK, the '99 Limiteds (and I think the '00s also) do have a center diff lock integrated in the transfer case, but there is no push button switch for the center diff lock like the '01-02s have. Instead, the t-case shifter on the '99-00 Limiteds goes like this:
-1st position: 2HI/4HI with a push button on the side of the shifter to choose - this will toggle between 2wd or AWD (aka 4HI unlocked).

-The next position on the t-case shifter is 4HI locked (which means regular 4HI)

-Then neutral

-And the last position is 4LO locked (regular 4LO)

how could I tell if my 97 has a locker?

The center locker (AWD) wasn't available until the '99 Limiteds so you definitely don't have that kind of locker (unless the PO installed a newer t-case and ECU). If you have a rear diff locker, you should have a black switch next to your steering wheel on the dash label "RR Diff Lock". You can also tell if you have the actuator motor hanging on the rear diff housing.

^^ Great info, thanks.

Ran across this 99' (for those that are partial to the 99' model years).

Used 1999 Toyota 4runner in Portland - Wilsonville, OR, SUV, Wilsonville Toyota Stock: 16419A

Its a one owner, but has 163k on it so a lot of miles.

Its hard to tell, but from looking at the pics of the dash it looks to have the rear e-locker. Price seems a little high, however it is a little below the KBB retail ($9035). Spoke to the sales guy and he said that there listed price is no haggle, what it is what it is...

Problem is that that they cant give me a "ballpark" trade value for my truck over the phone and I dont have time to go down there today since its a 45 min drive.

Anyway, he's getting some additional service history info on the rig and will be calling back. I will keep you updated.

Don't Hesitate

I would do it in a heartbeat. Its not every day that you can get out of payments and get a nice 4runner back.

Yeah it has the rear diff locker switch next to the steering wheel. No AWD in this one, but looks like a great 4runner. I say get it too if you can make a good deal on your trade in.

my '99 has all of these sweet options along with the diff lock and taller springs, woot woot, lol
