Potential new 3rd gen owner

Hi everyone!

I've been lurking on the forums for a few weeks now, ever since ownership of a 2002 SR5 has become a possibility. I'm hopeful that things will work out, and I'm cautiously optimistic, but I'd be curious to hear about what you guys think.

The seller, a friend of mine, will be moving out of the country and as a result will be selling his 4Runner. It's too bad that he has to get rid of it, but it's nice to know that he'd opt to keep it if he were staying stateside.

The good: Although this thing has a good amount of miles on it (over 175K), it's been fairly well maintained, and it's had some crucial replacements that I wouldn't have to worry about (timing belt, water pump and radiator!), so that's really appealing. The current owner has driven it across the country, and it's been super reliable. In addition, we took it to a shop and put it up on a lift to try to suss out any issues, and the frame and suspension aren't in bad shape! Especially great, considering it's a New England vehicle.

The bad: Unfortunately, the steering rack is apparently toast. The owner described a "wobble" at high speeds; I was initially wondered if it was the rotors after reading about known issues on the forum (they apparently look fine), but apparently the steering rack is the likely culprit. Also, there's an oil leak coming from somewhere... which wasn't readily apparent as the skid plate has been catching the leak for a while, hence a lack of evidence on the driveway.

Anyway, we were both majorly bummed to find all of this out. He's going to get the steering rack fixed as that's a major safety issue, and then have the shop diagnose the oil/fluid issue and try to figure out how costly a fix is going to be. I'm really hoping this all works out, as the truck seems to be in pretty great shape aside from these problems. Looking for a reliable vehicle though, so I'm not interested in getting in over my head with a potential money pit.

Which brings me to where I am today. Sincerely hoping that this works out, but in the meantime, if you guys have any advice or suggestions, I'd love to hear them. I've already learned a ton just from perusing the 3rd-gen forums, and I'm hoping that if I do get my hands on this vehicle, I'll learn how to wrench on it a bit.

Thanks!

houndrunner, I bet you get by with a valve cover gasket replacement and steering rack bushings - two common issues with a 'runner of that mileage.
Both are reasonably inexpensive repairs.
Good Luck with the new 4runner!

These are issues all high mileage runners have. If rack gets replaced try to go OEM or safari. All others known to fail pretty quick. Oil leak could just be loose valve cover bolts and or gasket.

Well, looks like the purchase is going to happen! The seller took it to the shop and it was determined that the oil leak was coming from a seal in the timing case -- the oil subsequently messed up both the bushings in the steering rack as well as the belts. But in the end, it makes financial sense for both myself and the seller to get it fixed up before he moves, so come mid-August, I'll be the proud owner of this beast!

4WD, good shape, leather seats, jade with thunder cloud fenders. Couldn't be more psyched. :D

It actually happened, you guys.

Will post more in the future if/when I make any worthwhile changes to the truck, and/or when I have questions about how to un-f*** whatever I was trying to work on. Stoked. :)

Nice looking rig! I like that color combo. But what is a timing case? Trying to wrap my head around what kind of oil leak would affect the belts and bushings. Cam and crankshaft seals would affect the timing belt. Would have to be a pretty good leak to splash around and take out rubber like that. Maybe post a pic.

I can't post a pic of the oil -- the work was done before I bought the truck. But I misspoke before and you are right: based on the paperwork, the cam seals were replaced (as well as the valve cover gaskets while they were at it). Like you mentioned, the oil wrecked the belts, which makes sense. As far as the steering rack bushings, however, I'm not sure about how much oil was actually splashing around, but when we originally put it up on the lift there was a ton of play, and the bushings were completely toast -- the shop said it was probably due to oil being all over everything. We knew there was a wobble at speeds above 60, but once the shop saw it, they wouldn't even take it out on the highway. :-/

Rides great now though! I'm so pumped.

I'm actually giving the guy who sold it to me a ride to the airport in a few hours -- he's moving out of the country, and I think it's a little bittersweet that he has to leave his 4Runner behind. The guy put 26,000 miles on it in just one year -- it's been all the way out to Oregon and back to Rhode Island, twice. Pretty awesome.
