Potential Upcoming Maintenance

I am trying to decide whether or not to trade in my 4Runner... Unfortunately, the 2003 was refinanced (stupid!) and I still owe 5K on it. I am at 174k miles and am wondering what major issues I might have over the next 3 years... I am putting on 12k a year now. Not sure if it warrants getting a new commuter car... I will say that there is a rattling coming from under the engine block, that was presumed to be a loose heat shield. And also a squealing in damp weather for 10 minutes on start up. The body and interior look new.... just worried about things like - wheel bearings, transmission issues....etc... I know no one has a crystal ball, but thought I would get some input from other 03 owners that have gone past the 175k mark...

I thought the squealing was the belts, but a mechanic said it was something in the engine...and told me to just turn the radio up for the initial ten minutes since it would require a lot of $$$ to correct.

Thanks for any advice...

Squealing in damp weather is either belt, pulley or both. NOT a major engine problem.

I get every thing fixed and keep driving. My 05 has over 230k miles on it..and it runs PERFECT. Very very reliable. Expect to reach 300k miles before I even consider getting rid of it.

Screw getting rid of it, try to hit the 400k club!

Engines don't squeak at start-up. Belts or the accessory it drives do. Pull the serpentine belt and fire it up for a few seconds and see if it doesn't go away.
Keep it till you pay it off. If the maintenance has been done, you should be ok till then.
