potentially dumb question...

I have decided that it's time to replace my cabin filter in my 2001 Sport because if I run the air (haven't tried AC yet, its snowy outside) there is a terrible smell like old gym socks and sweat. Search reveals posts only by members with the latest model 4Runners so my question is; where is the dang cabin filter? Thanks, sorry if perhaps I don't know how to use all of the sites features yet.

That link posted above will clean your fan blades themselves, but will not likely do anything for the smell in your system. I suspect your 2001 is like my 2002, and has no cabin air filter.

What you might try is removing the fan and motor unit like explained in the link posted above, spraying some disinfectant spray into your fan discharge ducting, re-install your fan and motor, and run the fan on high through all the different vent paths.

toyota even offers an AC cleaning service, i think its like 30$ or something, i had it done awhile back and it was real clean smelling afterwards....

Cleaning the cabin filter may not make the smell go away. It has to do w/ build-up of condensation and resulting bacteria when you use the A/C. I can't remember how they fixed this except a hole was drilled somewhere and a antifugal spray was used to clean up the bacteria.

Once this is done, the smell can come back but usually won't if you let the A/C cool down before you turn off the truck. In other words, turn off the A/C a few minutes before shutting down the engine.
