power antenna broke any ideas?

im gonna convert mine over to the manual antenna for the 4runner. lest parts to break.

i am lifted in the front with OME coils and tokico shocks tire size is 255/85/16 i rub a bit on hard turns as the wheels are 0 offset410toy said:

Hilarious. I have the same problem with the gears that drove the antenna up and down that finally wore down, so it just growls and the antenna doesn't move anymore. Reception is fine though.
I've been told by many that to get to the antenna motor is not for the faint of heart and difficult to get at.
Does anyone have an experience in replacing theirs?

You guys should look into the taco whip style antenna. I don't have part numbers handy but you should be able to find it by searching Taco Whip antenna mod on here or yotatech.com.
Basically you purchase a non motorized antenna assembly from a base model 4runner and then purchase a whip antenna from the Tacoma. Installing the antenna assembly can be done by pulling out the fender liner. It's not incredibly easy but not difficult either. The trickiest part is running the new antenna wire, but you could always cut and splice if thats the only problem you have. The Tacoma antenna screws right into the antenna assembly and is super durable.

LOL....... maybe I will keep it in just so I can tell people that the ejection seat is calibrating!! for those of you that want to change it to the tacoma whip antenna check out this site it is great and has detailed instructions. (4runners.org) it is listed at the bottom under exterior mods.
If you're lucky, buy an antenna mast from the dealer. Tell them you want only the mast and the cable, a good dealer should stock this as they break often.
Now, unscrew the slotted chrome nut and turn the radio on and lift out the old mast.
Insert the mast, cog side facing front of truck and have someone turn off the radio and feed it down it should grab it and suck it down. If you're lucky and no cable is broken inside it will suck it all the way down. If not, remove fender liner and remove antenna motor (note, use vise gribs to reinforce the motor bracket when removing the 10mm bolt your screwed if that breaks).
Let the motor hang on the 2 wires, remove the access cover and remove the broken cable. Installation is reverse of removal. After, install the cable as mentioned above.
Good Luck, if you have questions just ask. This is the cheapest way to go (Replacing mast only)

I replaced mine, very easy if the geared plastic cable hasn't broken. If you can hear your motor trying to raise or lower mast, and it wont, then cable broken. so now full on into the wheel well to get at the motor assembly(follow instructions from internet of included with mast) not a bad job took me 20 mins only advice I wish had prior! when taking apart motor be carefull of all the small backing nuts. I dropped one without knowing. very small very hard to find!

mine did the same thing, bought an el cheapo from advance for less than $10 and works fine. hasnt rusted or anything and been on for at least 8 months

I installed the taco whip antenna and am very happy with it! Like stated, the hardest part was putting in the new antenna wire. I scraped my hands a bit on some sharp metal pieces behind the glove box area. I do not recommend cutting and splicing antenna wire since the impedance of the antenna wire is tuned. Cutting and splicing the wire will yield poor reception in most cases.

Good post. I didn't know that about cutting antenna wire, thanks. I ran the new wire all the way up through but I know that everyones mechanical abilities are different. It really isnt hard. We took off the passenger airbag cover which gave access to pretty much everything back there.
