yeah this is fairly common...the antenna mast has a plastic/nylon cord that goes down into the motor and it has gears on it, which strip out
head to your local toyota dealer and pick up an antenna mast...then you're gonna wanna turn the radio on with someone lifting on the antenna to get the plactic cord out, then you just feed the new one in while someone turns the radio off...it'll pull the new one right down

Or if you're a lazy/cheap SOB like me you just put the antenna in the up position and then disconnect the antenna power cable.

It's easy until you get one like mine where the plastic cord broke off in the motor. Then its not so easy 
When you get the old one out make sure the nylon cord is the same length as the new one , if the old is shorter then you have a piece broken off down in the motor.

the tacoma whip is the standard antenna found on tacomas, and now fj's and a bunch of other rigs. its a non-retracting, flexible antenna that is pretty durable from what ive seen. it is a direct replacement for our retracting antenna's, and alleviates the issue of having your retracting antenna break and well.... not retract anymore

Broke my power antenna at the car wash (stupid me...was distracted). The old antenna and plastic cord were ejected from the motor, so it should be completely ready to accept a new antenna. However, I can't seem to remove the little base on top of the fender that the antenna seats in when retracted. 1. do I need to remove it? 2. any suggestions? 3. is it pressed on or screwed on (I tried un-screwing it but nothing happened). Great forum. Thanks for your advice.

Well I think I might have a problem very similar to yours. Here is the breakdown on what has happen so far....
1. Antenna no longer goes up, but I hear the motor going up and down.
2. Search on here and read about the plastic cord and went out and bought a new antenna mask.
3 Had someone turn on the radio and pulled the antenna out only to find no white cord. When I pulled out the antenna there was NO CORD attached to it and when I look down into the base I don't see anything.
4. I unscrew the chrome bezel/nut and pull off the rubber grommet. It was late at night and realized I was SOL at that point. I put the rubber grommet back on and tried to screw the bezel/nut back on, but it wasn't working. It seems as if the motor/base has dropped a bit when the nut isn't catching.
Now I called up toyota to see what I could do and the service advisor told me over the phone it sound like your going to have to replace the motor. Is this true? If so is the motor difficult to get to or is it something that I would have to drop off at the dealer. I'd really like to fix this myself if it's not too big of a job.

Including a very cheap place to buy one. If you can hear the motor, as you said, it is literally a less than 5 min. job. I've done it twice (#$%&*@ car wash).
