Power Brake Booster died and they want $850? Should I do it?

So I got into my 95 4Runner last night and the power brakes were DEAD. I can still brake if I push hard, but the booster is shot.

From what I can gather, it was probably a leak int he vacuum that killed the booster.

Is it possible that this would be fixed with simply a new vacuum hose?

I ma getting repair quotes of anywhere from $550-850. Does this sound right?

Should I pick up a booster at Pep Boys and do it myself instead?

Any help would be great!

Yes get the part and do it yourself.

Just a matter of unbolting the MC from the booster, then the booster from the firewall. You may have to disconnect the linkage rod from the pedal assy, can't remember for sure.

No brake lines need to be disconnected.

The booster is a simple repair, but if it was indeed a leaky vacuum line that caused the problem, make sure to replace vacuum hoses at the same time.

Did you replace the Brake Power Booster in your 4Runner?? The dealer told me $3,990.00 new to replace and $1,500.00 used?? This sounds nuts?? Please help if you did this and tell me what kind of job it is? I have great tools but never did anything like this before?? Done radiators, brakes rotors, starter just things like this? I have a 2007 $Runner V8

Bob, brake boosters are a very easy repair. Grab a manual as I am not familiar with a 2007 so can’t give you specifics. It’s really a very simple job and that amount of money for a 1 hour job is ridiculous.

I just replaced the booster on my 86 Turbo. it was almost impossible to find, so I had it rebuilt here:

Fortunately, they are about 45 minutes from me. I drove it down and waited for them to do it-about 1 hour. The good news? $130.00!
It took about 45 minutes to an hour to replace the booster-if you're handy, you can do it yourself!
Also, make sure you make sure the check valve in the vacuum line is working properly. I ended up replacing mine. It was about $30.00 from Toyota.
