Power door lock drama

Weird ish...

When I had my 4runner down for a few months for painting and crap, I decided to do some casual tests on my electrical system (thinking I had some parasitic drain). Anyway, that involved a random process of disconnecting the battery, reconnecting certain components (like just the starter, then just the fuse box, etc).

In that process I also tested the door locks and windows and crap, to see if power consumption lingered after say...locking the doors, or rolling up/down the windows.

Next day I needed to get in to the car, which I had left locked in my garage from the above testing. I noticed neither of my key fobs worked for crap suddenly, despite having <1 month old batteries in both... requiring 10+ clicks 1 foot away from the car to get it to unlock.

Now that the car is back together, painted, and on the road, I've just been dealing with looking like an idiot trying to lock it when I go in to the store or whatever, no big deal. Yesterday I noticed that my drivers side door wasn't locking with the rest of the doors when I pressed lock on the fob. Today neither the drivers door or drivers side rear door lock. Also, in the last two days, I've noticed the car doesn't always give me a confirmation beep when it locks (or..when two or three of the doors lock)

Can't lock the doors reliably using the switch on the door panel either - eliminating any thought of the FOBs being nuked.

It'd be quite the coincidence if two door lock actuators failed at the same time, so I'm wondering if the factory alarm is being a wanker, I have self induced electric gremlins from my battery testing fiasco, some door sensor is trying to protect me from locking myself out, etc.

I did have the door panels off on the fronts for painting reasons (to yank mirrors) but the physical door locks move up and down with equal ease, no resistance.. plus, I never touched the drivers side rear door panel.

Thoughts appreciated. Sorry that was long winded, I really need to work on that :attention:

Posting hoping someone else has experienced this before as well. Yesterday my driver's door lock stopped unlocking with the fob as well. I have not had a chance to really dig into it; I have just noticed it is a problem in high heat and after really wet weather.

Has it been very hot where you are? On my 2000 I find that in the hot weather whichever side of my truck that is sitting in the sun tends to fail. Mostly the driver's door on warm days, sometimes both driver's side. But sometimes it's the other side if I happen to park so it gets more sun on that side.

All of the actuators are activated by the same circuit on the Body ECU, so that should not be the problem. Since you have the same failure from the switch, it probably isn't the read door ECU, which is the receiver for the remotes.
:frusty:
Most likely tired actuators, but if NONE work, well that would not be the case.

Woohoo

Just went outside (6am here, still in the 50's) and had 100% success doing about 50 lock/unlock cycles. Neighbors with their bedroom windows open probably hate me at this point.

It's been hot as hell the last few days, mid 90's yesterday. I'll check again this afternoon when the sun is in full force to verify.

Thanks so much IBall, and good luck on your fix tx_shooter. Seems like we're up against the same crap

My 2002 door locks always act up when it's hot also just as you described. It occasionally occurs in the winter if it is really sunny out & if the sun is beaming down on my 4runner. I've yet to get around to figuring out & fixing this mysterious door lock issue. I've never seen this occur on my friend's 1999 though.
