all grades come fully equipped for the trails
toyota used the "trd packages" as a business selling tool but since most current model trd's no longer have the rear locker that's the only thing you'll miss.
toyota has since moved away from the rear locker since early 2000/01 (i think 2000? - don't quote me) and have started to employ their computer controlled traction system which for the 4th gen works wonders (can't say the same for the 3rd gens though). You really don't even need the rear locker! you can actually go pretty far w/ it's stock form. (i've tested it w/ great success along w/ lots of other members here and on other forums).
asking for the rear locker is a null issue since the market isn't there w/ all of the soccer mom's not using it for the trails. even the tundra doesn't even come w/ the rear locker (go figure).
trd did have the SC but they pulled the plug on that after some problems w/ the internals on the v8 blocks. so no go there unless the demand comes back for them to r&d again.
it's all about $ and unfortunately there's only a small percentage that really cares about offroadability/high performance. Most use it to carry loads to and from malls etc etc and will never see any kind of trails (including the 2wd folks).
It's sad but true. I give props to any individual that still take stheir vehicle offroading (any kind, 2wd/4wd etc etc) cuz they are a dying breed.
btw you do know that they did make some performance improvements by introducing the vvti stuff for 05 right? That in itself is a big change so I doubt you'll see anything else. Some other changes to note, the v6 grade now comes w/ the 5a/t instead of the 4a/t in the previous years (which i think was a great thing for the v6ers)
If you want major changes, wait till the next generation (08/09/10?).
