I think you are a bit confused as to what those numbers and terms mean. Torque is powerful, but nowhere near as important off road as on road. Example, buddy has a 2012 Caddy CTS V, something like 600 bhp and 400 ft lbs torque.
That vehicle would suck off road, heck, it isn't even rated to tow ANYTHING. If you want do something that helps with offroading, you should be looking at gearing. You ever wonder how a 15hp engine managed to move a WWII sherman tank? Gearing. Not torque, not "HP" not balls to the wall inter-cooler and 7 pounds of nitrous. Gearing.
I won't deny that the above things are helpful, heck yea. You add a NOS system to a sport car and you can see some sparks, but off roading is a totally different beast. It isn't about going 100 mph in 4.5 seconds. It isn't about HP as much as it is about pure moving power and the number 1 thing that impacts that is gearing.
Second. It is totally normal for a modern V6 to have a high end HP greater that a V8. But, these are totally different numbers and their practical application in the real world is totally different. V8's access their power curve MUCH sooner and at a MUCH lower RPM than a V6 or a I4. You ever wonder why a suped up I4 Honda civic sounds like it is about to launch? It doesn't hit its power curve till well in the 2-3-4k RPM range.
The 4.7 V8 is MUCH better at towing, where torque matters, because it access its pure grunt "pulling" ability much lower. The engine can move the boat at 2.5k vs. a V6 needing 4k.
As for off roading, you don't need a huge HP or Torque gain to see some nice improvements. Re-gearing down, adding a locker and some nice tires and you will easily out perform someone with a bigger engine.
My buddy has a old Nissan I4, geared down with huge swampers.....not many places he can't go.
Also, Torque hasn't a thing to do with air tools. I think you are mistaking electrical ability. You can add a higher output alternator on your truck that will give you a nice added electrical output for your air tools. Adding a new air filter doesn't impact the amount of electrical output off an alternator, nor is there a relationship between BHP/Torque and electrical production off the alternator. Alternator output is determined by the alternator design. Buy a better one, if you want more power.
