What power steering fluid do I use for a 2004 4runner V-6? The cap on the pump states Dexron Type ATF. The fluid currently in my pump is blue and I know most ATF fluid is red. Any help? Thanks MAC

The fluid that is currently in there is blue. I know most ATF fluid is RED. Not sure if the color means something? OK to mix?

It would be nice to know what's in there. By looking at Amsoil or Royal Purple's site does it look like it may be one of those? Once you can decide what's in there you can decide if mixing is ok.
I might just get a flush. At your mileage it wouldn't be a bad idea.

Whatever came from factory. The pwer steering fluid container is clear and I can see the fluid is blue/dark purple in color. I have owned the vehicle sine new so I am certain this is factory fluid. Anyone have a 04 4runner with same fluid? I might just call dealer to see what they say.....Thanks

The color of the fluid from the factor is a light amber. Its Dexron, but simply undyed (normal Dexron-type transmission fluid is only red because of a red dye added to it to distinguish it from other oils). The factory uses undyed Dexron-type fluid because...you guessed it...the dye isn't needed and they can get a small price break for not having the dye (and in the quantities they use the fluid, even pennies count).
As the fluid ages, it will turn dark...this is normal and caused by oxidation when they fluid is heated.
The reservoir bottle on the 4th gen 4Runners is one of two colors: whitish clear, or bluish clear. Either one is fine and is simply a variance of the plastic used to make it (often times there are multiple plastic vendors). The latest ones all seem to be bluish clear, though some older ones are as well.
When you view the fluid in the reservoir, it will appear either close to its natural color (with the whitish clear reservoir) or will have a bluish tint cast to it (with the bluish clear reservoir). The whitish clear reservoir's plastic will tend to yellow with age and heat.
So, long story short....use Dexron II or III for the power steering fluid in the 4Runner. The red dye makes no difference except for color.
