Power steering fluid level low. Do I use ATF or power steering fluid?

Please be assured I will never tell anyone anything of which I am not certain, OK? I have no idea why anyone would do that.

You can't really be certain that brake fluid cleaned and conditioned the system if you don't take the system apart and do before and afters right?

Could be that fresh atf does the cleaning and conditioning. It is high in detergents and could have additives that conditions seals. Not saying it didn't do what you claim, but is it safe to recommend in general? Idk. Definitely not advice to throw around if you are a mechanic.

There is only Dexron, but there are several versions of Dexron. Dexron VI is backwards compatible and mixable with Dexron IV and Dexron III. Any transmission fluid that says it is compatible with Dexron III will mix fine. The power steering system isn't as picky about fluid as our automatic transmissions are.


Edit: Just to make it clear Dexton/Dextron/etc are just wrongly spelled versions of "Dexron".

I read that GM doesn’t recommened Dex VI in vehicles requiring Dex III in any vehicles other than GM vehicles.

Could be but our Transmissions in 3rd gens use Dexron II or Dexron III. So the power steering fuild uses Dexron compatible fluid. GM didn't build our vehicles Toyota did so it dosent matter what GM says. If GM built our vehicles this would be different story.

I have been using ATF4 in all my systems requiring ATF for the power steering. I have over 20 quarts of the stuff
