Powerstop Brakes & Rotors????

Long story short, I our Advance Silver rotors and Advance Gold ceramic pads on my 4runner (specs in sig) last year. New calipers, rotors, pads front & new rotors and pads on back. Now I have the worst shimmy and brakes pulsing. Feels just like a warped rotor all over. You can actually feel it grabbing at a certain spot when slow braking.

Been looking at brakes kits and ran across this one:

Powerstop Evolution

Anyone had any experience with them? Are they better than Advance quality?

Have you already ruled our frozen caliper? I would look into this before buying rotors! You may be interested in doing a 5th gen conversion!

I put on power slot rotos and ebc green pads.

I wanted to get the power stops but cannot remember why i went with the power slot rotors.

I had some really bad shimmy 9 months in on my pads and ended up changing the pads and the shimmy went away. The pads i took off were uneven and worn down to different levels depending on where they came from. The driver side front pad was almost gone.

Drilled and slotted rotors are nothing more than a styling fad for street vehicles. You are actually giving up swept area on your disc. We don't have giant race car brakes to make up for that lost area, and couldn't possibly drive a 4Runner hard enough to need that extra cooling anyway. They are a particularly terrible idea for an off road vehicle, as they trap mud and grind it against your brakes. They also eat pads much faster, and usually can't be turned.

Ok, we'll they do have this kit that is not slotted or drilled

Power Stops are great as long as you don't offroad all the time like I do. They were awesome on the road, but dirt clogged up the holes and destroyed the pads with a quickness! Also, they didn't have that little metal strip that squeals when your pads are low and they were grinding before I even knew they were bad. Long story short, destroyed them in a couple months and went back to a traditional setup. I would use them on my car any day though as it never see's dirt!

It reads to me like 6ou can do this now. I have the same issue you do and I tend on giving it a try. If it doesn't work, then turn your rotors.

Ive been running slotted rotors on everything I own for well over 20years. I dont do drilled. Cross drilled loses up to 20% where slotted is around 3% depending on the manufacture. I have been using the brand Power Slot which I think is now owned and sold under the Centric brand. Slotted rotors work excellent but only if you have a need for them. I also use HAWK HPS pads in conjunction with these rotors. And contrary to popular belief, I do have excellent brakes, shorter stopping with less effort, and have not warped a rotor in well over 20+ years. I run this package on my 07 Dodge Charger SRT8, my 02 Ford Explorer Sport-Trac pre-runner off road truck and my T-4. Not everyone needs this brake package. I dont install this package on every vehicle I work on, just the ones who want it or need it and only after I fully explain the system.
It is true that many many brands out there on the market are just for show. With my stock wheels on my T4, you really cant see the rotors well enough to tell I have slotted rotors. The Power Slot brand is a real quality product, especially their cryogenic line. This info I know for sure and have real world experience with. To each their own. When in doubt, I tell folks to use regular OEM stuff.

You are correct partially about losing some swept area. Nobody in the forms of racing Ive worked with uses cross drilled because as you said, you have to upsize the brake package a bunch in order to make up for the loss of surface area. I do, and have had my T4 brakes hot enough to need the extra cooling. I no longer have any heat related issues with the package Im running. Our T4's have great finned rotors up front and the brand of slotted I use only enhances the braking and cooling plus keeps the pads clean. For my style of use, I removed the inner shields on the front rotors and this has helped a bunch when we are running hard, especially on our off road Ford we have.

Oh yeah! I love that car a ton...Its all kinds of fast. Ive had it up to 165mph. That will curl your hair...Plus that thing stops, turns and just flat out gets busy! Im thinking of trading it in on a new one maybe next year. The new one has 485hp.:bounce:

Well it was nice knowing you

Thinking about getting the PowerStop for the 5th Gen, for use on my 4th Gen. Any thoughts?
