Pre-2020 Android folks, what app do you use to play/control MP3s?

I've always been an iPhone user, mostly out of habit. A friend of mine gave me his screen-cracked Samsung Note 9 w/ 512 GB and I thought I'd put it to use as a permanent fixture as the default Bluetooth MP3 player. With such a large capacity I can take advantage some of my rips being .flac.

Unfortunately I cannot get the 4runner to control any aspect of the Note. It will receive an audio signal over bluetooth but that's all. There's no tag data displayed or any control like I have on my iPhone or a USB stick.

I can sort of get it to work if I manually go into the files, select an MP3 and choose Samsung music as it's player. It still doesn't show any tag data but I can at least fast forward though it's restricted to whatever album said MP3 is playing from and still no option to browse via the 4runner's head unit.

I used to use Googles music player but they killed that for Youtube Music (might be of interest to you but I hated it) and ultimately couldn't find an app that worked as good so I gave up and started using Spotify for my music.

I've been using Music Player & MP3 Player from InShot Inc (I am not affiliated)
on my Samsung S10 Plus and now on my Note 20. Samsung music erased all my music files once on the S10, never going back. Works OK, I don't love it.

Using it to play mp3 files stored on the SD card in my phone.

I use Audify Music Player on my Samsung Galaxy S8. I pay the annual fee to avoid the ads, but I think there's a free version as well. I rarely pay for apps but I found this one to be very good, so I signed up for a year and haven't been disappointed. Give it a shot

I'm not pre 2020, but been an Android user for several years. I use Poweramp for all of my music playback.

Ive been using this for my music, navigation, and Gaia. Its pricey but its good. Requires quite a bit of fiddling to get it customized to your liking. Hope it helps.
