Former 3rd gen owner here. Looking at a 4th gen this time around and I'm looking for some unbiased opinions here on initial check lists. For example, if I was looking at another 99?

-when were balljoints done
-if it were an auto, ever had the pink milkshake or whatever
-rear axle seals/bearings done?

Those "typical" maintenance things that are essentials for the people who keep up on their rig. What is a complete rundown on the 4th gen versus 3rd? I can figure out what lift and tire size later, but for now. I saw the difference in 4 speed or 5 speed automatics, any preference strongly between the v8 or v6? Any longevity precautions? Coming from the land of 3.4 powerplants, mileage was not super concerning.

Any quick run down on what to look for is greatly appreciated. I will be looking for one that is about 8k-10k and have 8-10k further to get it 110% maintenance wise and some mods. It will be a woods runner/camping rig and light utility work around here as needed. Already have a nice system for it.

Thanks for the input.

Calipers calipers calipers.

Rust

CV boots

check if rear diff breather is rusted shut.

Tbelt for v8 water pump belts AC plugs

. last transmission was flushed, and if WS was used.

Xreas or not.

fluids in general.

calipers calipers calipers, does the parking break work, they never work on these cars.

for the V8 exhaust manifold leak ticks (check it when engine is cold)

all i can think of besides normal check down of a used car.

if you really want to check to see if a car was taken care of look at the brake fluid if its all dusty and looks like its never been opened. you know what kind of car you are getting.
