Prepping and painting bare metal

Just got my addicted offload sliders from Christmas in the mail. I'm friggin excited! I want to know the most anal retentive way possible to prep and paint slightly rusting bare metal.

My plans:
Sand the shit out of them with 100 then 150 then 200
Self etching primer
Rust oleum finish

My problem

Did this to my ODL bare steel bumper and am getting rust spots, so it's getting taken off and redone Sunday as well.

The sanding really isn't even necessary, if you do it, do something less abrasive.

Also, make sure you wipe down the whole bumper with mineral spirits,acetone, or denature alcohol. This removes the rust protectant they put on the bumper so rust doesn't develop as it ships

Use a Zinc based self-etching primer. That is what we use in the body shop when we replace quarter panels and other welded pieces. We guarantee our repairs for as long as you own the vehicle, so we know it works!

For the best finish, powder-coating. For next best, use automotive paints, not rattle cans. I'd sand them with 180 then spray with epoxy primer. Use a single-stage urethane paint over that (top-coating within about 4 hours so it bonds with the epoxy). It will be much harder than any rattle can paint and not get scratched off as easily. But, unless you happen to have the paints sitting around from a previous project, it's probably just as cheap to have them powder-coated (and let someone else do the work, and avoid breathing the poison).

If you're going to this much work to paint and rust proof rock sliders, perhaps you didn't need rock sliders? I may not be an expert, but every pair of rock sliders I've owned are used to slide on rocks, and receive multiple dents and gouges. No paint will stand up to that.

I paint them with rustoleum sprayed through a gun, easy to touch up and cheap.

Coastal- just so we are clear i completely agree with you, however you need to know that not only do I not need rock-sliders, but I also don't need ANY of the modifications I've done thus far or am planning to do. Each and every one of my modifications are completely over the top, devoid of necessity and arguably silly for me to own. i cannot summon one good reason why i genuinely need to go through mud,rock or snow to get to a destination i could easily get to by other means, and thats before considering the value of actually being there in the first place. However, I did "want" rock-sliders, thus I found a way to acquire them through Christmas from wife unit. I wanted a winch and rear bumper too but I have to wait and save. For future reference I can guarantee you, the winch and rear bumper and further modifications of my rolling depreciation machine will also serve no legitimate purpose other than being awesome to me.
