Pressurizing gas tank?

Went wheelin today with some friends at Barbour Park just outside Idaho Spring for the first time. Thinking back on the day I had some questions about the runner. We were wheelin on some pretty hilly stuff and pretty good climbs. We stopped a couple of time and I noticed that even with the runner off, there was a sound like a quite air compressor at the rear. Turns out that some the gas tank was pressurizing. When I took the gas cap off there was a gas release and then it sounded like the gas was boiling. The engine temp gage showed just below level but I could feel heat coming from the center console. Also, the runner started to smell a little like gas. Once we started coming down I shifted out of 4Low and the inside cooled down and the gas smell went away. Coming back on the highway I didn't notice any thing acting out of the ordinary.

The engine is cooling down right now and I though I would see if anyone had any suggestions about what to check. Has anyone else had this occur to them? Do I need to be worried? I was think something might be wrong with the fuel pump but not really sure how I could go about checking it.
