Well I havent been on here in almost a year. I had my 2005 Black V8 limited repo'd so I haven't had much to contribute to the site. I am currently looking for a 3rd gen and i've found a couple and wanted some opinions......

The First one
1999 Limited with all options including e-locker with 225K for $6000

The second
1997 SR5 one owner with 166K asking $6500

Unfortunately there isnt much around here to choose from and my car is being totaled out as we speak so I need a car which doesnt put me in a good situation. Any help is appreciated guys.

Thanks

If i were you i would go with the 97, it is a little expensive but you have a lot more miles left, i wouldn't buy it unless you got him down to $5.5k . Keep looking too.

BTW 97 is the best year, which is a fact, JK, but i would only buy it if you have no more time, make sure you are ready to walk out at any point when tryin to talk them down, you want to get the point across that you dont need their 4runner.

I just bought my 1997 SR5 2wd with 95k miles for $6000. Its in great shape and has new tires. I seem to think you can get that 1997 for $5500 ish...

Well i've been talking to both owners and the one with the limited wont budge at all so that one is out. The guy with the 97 is willing to negotiate but has 4 people already looking at it and some one coming tomorrow to take it to a mechanic to get checked out. He said if it doesnt sell he"ll let me know and i can go see it. Unfortunately I wont be able to buy until next week. I only found one more but its 400 miles away and with a repo company. Its a 97 limited with 131K for $6000

Since you had the 4th gen previously I would recommend sticking with the 99+ runners. You can check out the sticky titled "99 Mid Gen Upgrades" if you are unfamiliar with the differences. I just think it would be a smoother transition and the 96-98 has too many interior faux pas from the 2nd gen.

Well unfortunately my price range is limited. The only ones I have found that I can afford are close to 200K miles or they have a branded or salvage title. I found a black 98 SR5 with around 190K on it asking $5400.

Some people say they wouldnt hesitate to buy a runner with 200K+ on it but i'm just not sure. I dont want to spend every penny I have and have something break. Plus I gotta have money for the lift and tires!

Woah, yes and no, ive never had an issue going between vehicles, but those 99+ features are nice and have installed quite a number of them.

I wouldn't spend $5k on something that had 190k miles on it, Toyota or not.

Honestly sir, I just don't think a 4R is the right choice with your given budget or criteria.

My $.02

Well I talked to the guy with the 1997 SR5 with 166K on it. Pictures looked good and I ran the car fax on it and it came back really clean. I think I'm going to get it. Final price is $5500. What do you guys think?

Its not a great deal, that is probably worth $5000, but if you need it, its only $500.

Well I pulled the trigger and bought a 97 SR5 with 168K for $4800. Its in amazing condition and everything works and it runs perfectly.

Is this one of the ones you were looking at? Big price drop if it was.

Congrats! Throw up some pics!

No I just happened to stumble upon it at work. Got bored and started looking on craigslist and saw it. Called and made an offer without seeing it. It was a married couple in their late 50's, garage kept and the wife drove it to work. Clean title and 4wd worked flawlessly. Has a few minor blemishes and the antenna doesnt work. The motor does but the antenna itself wont move. Awesome color too. Dont know the name of it but its almost a chocolate color.

So the pics will be posted soon?

Congrats on the purchase! The antenna is a common problem where the mast breaks and no longer extends. Plenty of info on here to fix it if you are unfamiliar with the issue. Some opt for the Tacoma whip antenna instead. I think I know the color you're talking about and it looks great, not as good as black, but at least it's not silver ;)::zoom:
