Price my 4runner

Hi all!

Getting ready to sell my 4Runner (still need to get it cleaned up), and I need some help figuring out what to price it at.

It’s a 97 with the 3.4 paired to a manual transmission. It has a rear mount turbo with internal waste gate set to 7psi. I did the LC/tundra lift on bilstien 5100’s. It’s sitting on the metric equivalent of 33’s. I’ve build custom front and rear bumpers. It has the tundra front brake swap. Roof basket on low profile mounts. Aftermarket double din head unit with backup camera and wireless calling. Wet okole front seat covers.

The paint on the hood, and roof just in front of the sunroof is getting a little beat. The sunroof doesn’t open (however the motor works, just haven’t had a chance to troubleshoot it yet), and the back window works, however, requires a little assistance to go back up.

That’s all I can think of to mention at this point. I checked kbb and it said anywhere from 2-4k, but that seems a little low. It has 280,000 miles on it, but the motor still sounds and runs great.

What would you price it at?!

KBB is way off unless it's a total beater with a blown head gasket. More like 12-14K for a 97 manual, turbo, lifted with 33s and custom bumpers. Why in the world would you want to sell it?

Yeah, definitely curious to know why you're up for selling it. I see you're down in the 757. If I lived back home I would LOVE to see that thing. I'm up in NOVA now though. Sad face

It has been an awesome truck, and the vehicle I’ve owned longest in my life, I’ve had very little issues with it. I’ll be really sad to watch it pull away because I’ve put a ton of time and energy in it and have some really good memories in it.

I play contractor Dave a lot on weekends, and the 4Runner just isn’t great for hauling stuff around. And the turbo helps when I’m pulling a trailer, but I have to be real cautious with some of the loads I pull (pulled a few cords of wet oak a few weekends ago in a car trailer). We’ve also got 2 kiddos now and are thinking of a 3rd. I wish there was a way I could park it in the backyard and keep it around until the kids were a little older. It’s a BA truck and a lot of fun to drive.

If the sunroof motor is working but the sunroof isn't, it's likely stuck cables. And that is NOT an easy fix.

Bring-a-trailer has been seeing strong 3rd gen prices over the last few years. The bubble (was it?) on car prices is easing a bit though, I've been seeing lower prices and more reserve-not-met auctions. They tend to accept less common (in some way) 3rd gens, manual trans certainly is a plus. And automatics that are unusually low miles and/or exceptionally clean looking.

Yeah, 2 - 4K is ridiculously low, unless it was actively on fire while the seller was looking at it. Not even close to a reasonable price.

But the miles and cosmetics probably hurt the value a bit, these are slowly turning into collectible cars, to a certain extent. People had one, wore it out, and now they want another one, and they'd like to buy a brand new one from the Toyota dealer, only they can't, so usually the best money out there is waiting for a bone stock super duper clean low miles example. 5k-Mile 1996 Toyota 4Runner SR5 for sale on BaT Auctions - sold for $43,000 on May 15, 2020 (Lot #31,485) | Bring a Trailer

And mods subtract from the value, before they start adding it back. People like modded 4Runners, I've modded a bunch of stuff on mine, but it's something that a lot of people enjoy doing, all the mods are done in a purposeful way, it's not always generic enough that it will suit the next person's tastes as well as your own.

I guess if I were selling it, I'd try asking 12 - 14K as mentioned above, but be prepared to wait a while and accept a lower offer at some point if you really want to move it and no-one has nibbled on it yet.

Well I priced my mine on craigslist for $9000 and I got no takers. Some guy offered $6000 a year ago but I said no. I would say your 4runner is worth about $8000 with all of the mods but you have to find a niche buyer. I thinks you can get $10k on carsandbids.com very easily. There are car enthusiasts on there that watch Doug Demuro all day and likes turbo manuals. lol.

It's still a 280,000 mile turbocharged engine at the end of the day, but if it has no rust then that's a huge plus.

Time to get another 3rd gen. Or an LC80! I feel sad you had to sell it, but hopefully the future holds another one for you in the near future. Glad you were able to get a decent amount of money for it though.

It belonged in your side yard. As you get older you'll realize money is fake and 3rd Gens are the gold standard. :sad:

Edit - that said, I've done all kinds of regrettable things raising my 3 kids on a shoestring. I didn't mean to sound quite that dark - you can recoup or upgrade one day. The only car I've ever bought NEW in my life was a 2007 Honda Odyssey minivan. #FORTHECHILDREN. It had a very hard life and I got misty when the Junk You Car truck showed up..... RIP. It still hurts.

Lol, no worries man, I really thought about it and tried to figure out a way to justify it to my wife, it just wasn’t in the cards.

The good news is I love tinkering and upgrading, and as my kids get older my plan is to buy something else and make them help me tinker and upgrade so they can learn. Not a ton they can learn from something already built.

We’ve also got 2 kiddos now and are thinking of a 3rd.

Too late now... but we put our 3 (still young) kids in the back of the 4Runner for mountain trips. Roof rack and hitch carrier for the crap. The van gets daily and highway trip duty though...

And yes, you have to be CRAZY careful on tuning if pulling a load. Most/all tuners know how to tune for 2-10 seconds of full throttle, not minutes of 1/2 to 3/4 throttle... (saw this on my WRX going up mountain passes, mostly)

I have 3 car seats in a row in the backseat of my 4Runner! I realize it's gone now but very doable. They actually prefer 'daddy's truck' over the roomy sedan as they can see out the windows better.

My 4 year old loved my truck over moms outback for that reason. She could see the road so much better.
