Pricing? 3rd Gen 4Runner with Ultra Low Miles

I always promised myself I wouldn't be the person to make this kind of post on the forum but I'm genuinely torn on this opportunity and, given that I'm a 4th Gen owner, am unsure on what a fair price for this rig is.

I have the option to buy a stock 1997 Limited with 43k from a local doctor. The mileage seems to check out from the records on the Toyota Owners website (and that it still looks new). The only owner is an elderly gentleman (75+) who claims the T-Belt has been replaced twice (due to age). There is some surface rust on the frame but nothing that seems too troubling. No accidents. 4WD with no locker.

Any suggestions on a fair price?

Anything to look for tomorrow morning?

Pics necessary. I'm assuming it wasn't a daily driver, so it is really clean. This thing could fetch a pretty penny, and I'm talking upwards of 20k. There are naysayers to this 20k figure, but they cannot argue that clean and low mile 3rd Gens have sold for the numbers in the past.

Just because people are asking those prices doesn't mean people are paying them. These things are as common as it gets, not some limited production exotic car. There's nothing special about them, period.

Quit playing dumbass. I'm not telling him to pay 20k. I'm simply stating that people are buying them for those numbers in that condition. Stupid fanatics? I guess, but I highly doubt they are dailying these things at those sale prices, so their condition won't change much. If he can get this for what you are suggesting, then he could make a killer profit by selling it to a "stupid fanatic" and put that money towards one with higher miles.

Easy $10K in the Southern California market, maybe some rich idiot(we've got plenty of those here) would pay $12K. I paid $8K for a 120K miles 97 SR5 locker in excellent condition...and I looked for 7 months.

I paid 10k for my clean 2002 with 145k miles on it. 43k is low but a new motor in a 200k mile 4runner only cost 2-3k installed so gotta remember that. dont over pay but if your looking for a cheap price and trying to be fair id say off him like

6-8k and see how that goes, thats a fair price for someone not crazy about 4runners like us. its still a very common 20 year old car gotta remember that.

My guess is between 7k-10k because of the low miles but it's still almost 20 years old!

Thanks for all the replies, I thought I'd get bashed for posting a "pricing" thread like this. However, I (painfully) decided not to check it out this morning as I don't "need" another 4Runner.

I had a few people on here PM me for details so hopefully someone who will enjoy it ends up with it. For reference, the private party seller is asking $8500 and is in the process of getting all service records printed from the local dealer this morning. Looked like a total cream puff other than some Indiana surface rust.

You've got to remember that the miles aren't only on the engine. These things can drive great even with 200k and beyond, but swapping in a new engine won't take care of the wear on every other component. The money spent to get it to the condition of a low mile truck will add up quickly. How do I know? I bought another higher mile 4Runner and did an engine swap. It doesn't compare to my low mile one. Both are the same year, with the other having 100k less on the overall vehicle. Frankly, I would not be surprised if someone else(perhaps a dealer) buys this and puts it on eBay.

I've been offered 13k for my current 99 with 91k miles so for you say that a 3rd gen with 43k miles is worth maybe 6k is a moronic response. You should know better especially being from Colorado where 3rd gens are selling for some of highest prices in the nation.

If someone was dumb enough to offer you that much for your '99, you should have said yes and laughed your entire way to the bank for separating someone that stupid from their money. Apparently there is a serious fan following for these things because some of these numbers I'm seeing are crazy! Who the hell spends 7 grand on a 17+ year old basic SUV with 200k+ miles? I guess I would be a total idiot to NOT take the free 97 SR5 4WD 4runner my brother is giving me. It only has 204k miles and is in decent shape, I just need to ship it from AZ to WI and put about 1500 into it for miscellaneous stuff (tires, exhaust, fluids, ect but runs perfect as it sits). I figure I'll have about 2500 into it when its all said and done, should be an awesome "beater" for my up north hobbies.

I'm not gonna say the 3rd gens are made of gold, but isn't it a good thing that you see 20 or more on the road everyday. Can't say the same thing about mid to late 90s blazers or explorers. These things hold together extremely well which gives them value.

My point exactly. He believes his opinion defines the market and that the "stupid fanatics"/"people with money that know what they want" do not mean anything. If someone offered me 6k for a truck like that, I'd tell them to F off. Now if the owner of this truck doesn't know what he has, then OP could easily make a 10k profit.

There's realistic prices, then there's whatever the hell you're going on about. The OP stated 8500, which is relatively realistic. Flipping it for a $10k profit, you're out of your God damned mind.
