Privacy concerns.. ?

I tried to buy some things from the Demello website and in order to do so I had to create an account; (there is no ability to purchase as a guest that I could find).

In order to set up account you need to provide name address and all that but part of "required information" is my birth date and gender... ? huh? WTF?

Why are those pieces of information relevant to purchasing rear links?

I know privacy is a mere illusion these days but still...

In the end, I went elsewhere and sent them a note asking for an explanation. I guess I just get prickly when folks gather information that has no relevance to the current activity.

There, I've ranted and I feel better. Thanks for listening.

Maybe they will send you happy birthday wishes or discounts in the future?? As for sex, maybe they will address you as sir or madame in their emails??

For me, those info aren't that big of a deal...it's not like they are asking for your SS#.

Sure, I'm fine with the birthday card but it should not be a "Required" piece of information in order for me to purchase something there.

I personally feel its a lot bigger deal than you appreciate but everyone can choose to give up what ever information they are comfortable with.

Again, for me, the rub is that it is mandatory in order to effect a sale.

Yeah, i can understand your fear regarding the mandatory part. But, remember, registering for THIS FORUM requires those same info, right? At least, it did when i registered 10 years ago! :D

But, this is why i have LifeLock.
