Problem even WORSE after cleaning MAF sensor

So a while back ago i had posted a thread about my 99 4R Limited 3.4L RWD idling really rough and jerking/lagging when its first fired up. It got really bad for a while and i decided to follow this tutorial on how to clean it my MAF. after that the problem got MUCH worse. driving on the highway is practically impossible and very dangerous because either A) the truck wont get up to speed (stays ~45mph) or B) the truck will get up to speed, but will decide to slow down on its own. I have no idea what to do next other than maybe replace the sensor all together. im asking you guys if you have any other suggestions. i use the truck to get to work/school and its my only vehicle and i'm a broke student, so im picking and choosing my options pretty carefully. i have never cleaned the MAF it before and i dont know if they previous owner ever did, but ive owned it for about 80k miles and it has a total of 215k miles. always ran strong otherwise.

Dont just start throwing things at it hoping it will fix itself. Do some diag work. Is your check eng lite on? Is it misfiring? The best cheapest way to fix your car is to get a solid diag on what is happening. If you are unable to do that, take it to someone who can. You will be money and time ahead

Yeah the CEL has been on for a while and my code scanner said it was misfiring and running too lean. it likes to idle too low and die at stop signs also, usually when its hotter outside. thats all i have for now. i KNOW plugs and wires need some replacing, which is on the list too.

I dont remember the code from the scanner. i left my truck at my parents and borrowed my moms car. i'll be back there this evening to start working on it. i can get back to you on the code. any suggestions based on symptoms?
 
If it's misfiring, then the plugs and wires are a good place to start! Cleaning your MAF wont help that situation...

Not sure if this engine has an exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR) but those are all symptoms of an EGR valve that is stuck open.
 
has the fuel filter been changed yet? You said it was running lean? that filter might be clogged especially with the mileage you have on there.
 
are you sure the maf isn't damaged? cleaning a fubar'd sensor won't do any good, or maybe it was accidentally broken during cleaning. not a likely cause but something to check nonetheless
 
hey guys, sorry i havent been around. been busy with work and borroring a car therefore the runner is on the back burner till friday.

Cleaned the MAF sensor and throttle body, got it running much better than it was. took it out and still wont shift. im doing plugs + fuel filter friday and see if that helps. it feels like im getting the motor running better but the truck just doesnt go. you can floor it and hear that motor work but not go anywhere. while i think im getting the truck running nice i may have 2 separate problems here.

any thoughts on possibly the torque converter or transmission?

I dont think it is damaged, it ran a LOT better after a good cleaning. just still has problems actually moving while accelerating.
 
I had a similar problem. It happened right after I did a tune-up and didnt tighten the ground wire on the intake manifold. On the 3.4l its on the drives side above spark plug 3 in the back. It causes eradic engine behavior. I did the same thing replaced the MAF and I even replaced an A/F sensor, nothing helped. Check that wire, once tightened no problem.

yeah i did. sorry i havent been back around to tell you all, ive been very busy and tired, this may not even be coherent. It ended up being the MAF. apparently it had been at the point of no return before we tried cleaning it.

although i replaced plug wires, plugs, fuel filter, cleaned the throttle body and replaced the MAF sensor. we replaced the MAF sensor last w/ advance auto's LAST denso sensor for $80 and now runs like a champ with all its new parts :)

scared the crap outta me that it had no improvement after all that work... turns out the sensor was just crap and needed to be replaced.

consider this issue solved :)
