ProbleM wipers are ether FAST or OFF

hey guys, just had a maintenance question for you.

i am used to working on 3rd gens but my moms 4th gen 03 limited has a problem.

one day when there was ice and slow on the front window my dad tried to clear it off using the wipers, well pulling on them while they were iced to the window wasn't good for them and broke something.

my problem is that when its now raining there is only on and off no intermediate settings, like high med or low. just fast or off.

what is wrong? how do i fix it? let me know!

I have an 03 runner sr5 with the same issue...the delay like doesn't work. It has a mind of it's own and mine stops in the middle of the windshield. I have to time it just right to turn it off in the right spot. I talked to some guys and they said it's common for the whole switch to go bad (the wiper stalk) ...But, mine's still messed up.
