Problem with 2006 T4R E7008 navigation system

Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum, looking for help.

I live in Canada and imported my 4R from US.
When i picked it up at a border warehouse and turned ignition key
to ON or started engine and a message appeared on nav screen: "No DVD, Please insert Map DVD". I inserted the DVD which came with the vehicle and notning changed, same message.
More over integrated JBL Audio and Rear View monitoring systems are non operable as well. Buttons on steering wheel and unit itself do not respond, except of "Load-Unload" Map DVD. You can hear "beep" sound when "Tilt, Audio or Map/Voice" button are pressed.
Looks like all system is locked.

The DVD I received with navigation is: W41 D, 86271-33043, 464210-0530, DATA ver.04.1

May be this software is old and not compatable with OEM installed E7008 unit?

Where can I get info: What program/map DVD will work with the system?

Any ideas how to make it function?

THANK YOU

You can try pulling the fuse for the navigation unit or disconnecting the battery. You will have to initialize the auto windows and note your tripometers if you disconnect the battery. This will clear the nav and when power is reconnected, it will force the nav to read the DVD disc and reload the firmware. This might help, but if the DVD disc is the wrong disc for that version of the nav all together it might not work.

IIRC, the E7008 should have a version 6 disc.

Would you explain : What does "IIRC" mean?
Do you think it will work with disc bears letter U, version 7.1 - latest released version?

Yes I did disconnect battery already - it did not help. I also tried to enter navigation diagnostic mode on the unit, but could not because you need a "map screen" for this. I scanned the vehicle with OBD II tool, it did shaw "no stored trouble codes".

Canadian dealer says, canadian version of 4R does not have OEM navigation system installed, they know next to nothing about this type of navigation. They told me that unit is manufactured by Panasonic (that is not true) and even the vehicle still has warranty, because it's US vehicle, according to Toyota Canada - warranty does not cover navigation system. They said : you can go to any US dealer to repair it.
To me - it's a crap.
I proved to the dealer that navigation is made by Denso corporation and asked dealer to contact Denso Canada to find out if it can be repaired in Denso shop, I agree to pay for repair (do not know how much it will cost, may be cheaper to buy knew one from OEMvalue or after market).
So far did not get any respond from the dealer (already month).

THANK YOU

IIRC=if I recall correctly

There are two types of discs as far as I know. There's the factory map/firmware disc and the updated map disc. From what I've read, the disc the dealer sells are the updated disc and not that factory map/firmware disc. In certain cases (yours might be one of them) you'll need that factory map/firmware disc. The updated map won't doesn't work in some situations. However if your nav is completely locked up, it would not hurt to try.

Does the audio (radio/cd) functionality work?

Sorry, I can't be of anymore help. This is the first time I've read about the nav going haywire. Please post your findings and what the remedy was.

Thank you, good luck.

Problem with 2006 (E7008) Navigation Sysytem solved

I bought latest version 7.1 Map DVD U32 D, put it in and it works !!
I did try U31 D version 6.1 , nav system works as well.
Probably disconnecting of positive battery terminal killed the nav.
DVD I got with the vehicle W41 D Ver4.1 could not initialize the system because they did not match. So original U32 D Ver. 7.1 is the solution.

Hey TOD. The E7008 is a 5th gen nav system, so if I remember correctly, only the 6.1 & newer update discs will work. Which, as you discovered, was the fix. They never should have given you the 4.1. It is the wrong disc for the nav system you have installed.

There actually aren't two "types" of discs, per se, although there are different versions (which are your updates). The map/firmware disc supplied with the vehicle from the factory, and the "update" map software disc the dealer sells are the same. The disc that is included with the vehicle when it's delivered should have the newest software available included with it at the time of vehicle manufacture. After a year or two when your disc gets out of date, and the mapping company has issued newer versions, you may decide to update to a newer one. The dealer (or whoever), would then sell you this newer version, which is also being supplied as the original software disc for the vehicles being sold at that time.

It's the same with aftermarket systems. If you bought an Alpine navigation system two or three years ago when the NVE-N872 first came out, you would have received the newest disc available at that time. However, if you buy the same Alpine navigation system today, you will most definitely have the newest disc included, which would also be available seperately from a dealer (ie, audio shop), or from Alpine as an update software disc for the nav system you bought several years ago.

Now if I had an Alpine NVE-N872 navigation system, and the disc was destroyed or lost, I wouldn't buy a disc that was made for the NVE-N851, it would have to be a disc for the NVE-N872. The disc for the 851 wouldn't work in it. It would be a different gen nav system. The software is different. The same goes with the OEM systems. They gave you a disc meant for an older nav system. Not the 5th gen E7008 installed in your 4Runner. It just won't work. Not compatible.

You shouldn't have had to pay for that new update disc since the original disc the dealer supplied was the wrong disc, you weren't updating. You simply needed the correct disc for the system to even work. The 6.1 or 7.1 should have been the disc you got with it originally.

Just curious if they were trying to pull a fast one with the disc, or did it unknowingly. And who was it that actually pulled the fast one? Regardless, again you shouldn't have had to pay for it. The dealership should have known this.

Hi A/V 1,

Thank you for explonation.

The dealership I bought the 44Runner is in Florida. It's not-Toyota small dealership, and the vehicle was shipped to Canada, where I live. They, probably, gave me wrong version disc by mistake.
The 4Runner still on warranty, but as I was explained in Toyota dealership Toyota Canada does not cover Nav DVD disc with warranty. As dealership sells the MAP DVD disc in sealed package and it's not refundable if unsealed, I had to buy one, even to try if it works.
