Problem with brake caliper sizing

Hello,

I have been having a heap of trouble putting on new brake calipers. My old ones were getting really sticky and I figured it was time to change 'em out. I have 15 inch rockcrawler rims on and the guy at autozone insisted I needed the 15 inch calipers. The 15 inch calipers didnt fit, they couldnt quite reach the mounting bracket so I went back and got the calipers for 16 inch wheels. Those fit on the 4runner no problem but now my wheels wont go on because the calipers are slightly too big. I bought my 4runner used and have no idea what the previous owner had on there but it worked. Can I grind down the bulky parts of the caliper to make the wheel spin or are there slightly different sized calipers I should be looking for?

Maybe bring the old caliper to the auto store and match them up? There's really only a few types of calipers that fit these trucks.
However, yes you can grind the caliper down to fit. Make sure to repaint with high temp paint; that's one component of your truck you really don't want rusting through.

my truck used to have the small calipers because it used to have the 15" rims. my dad upgraded the truck at some point to the 16" ones. anyways the 15" ones will fit but it sounds like they were the wrong ones he was trying to give you.

Break Caliper problems for 15's

Hi all! I'm new to this site and have few problems trying to fit 15's on my 02 4Runner. I grind a few inches off my caliper and also used a 1/4 spacer to fit my 15's procomp steelies. My problem now is my studies is too short but it can still fit the wheels on without hitting my caliper and I can still screwed my bolt on but not all the way. Will this still be safe. Have anyone have this problems with their 3rd gen 4Runner. Please help!

Maybe just find some used 16 rims even stock 16incher and be done with it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, your having trouble getting your lug nuts on the stud because of your spacer? What kind of spacer are you using? If you can't get your lug nuts on secure, this can be very dangerous. Would not recommend it. You might need a different wheel spacer for it to work or get longer studs which I'm not sure how easy that is on the front.

Maybe just find some used 16 rims even stock 16incher and be done with it.

Whats the fun in that? That's like saying getting a new 4runner because you have your engine light on. Half the fun is figuring out how to fix something with what you have. :happy:
