So I have 96 4x4 5speed with 250k original motor it was running just fine till I installed a k&n intake on it and it started idling high around 1500 to 2500 and it started making a ticking noise by the battery figured out it was the vacuum switching valve so I replaced and stopped but the rpms are unstable and it does not throw a code and I just found out it has not cat? FML! Help!

Any clues? I just took off the intake and cleaned the maf sensor and throttle body with Carb cleaner waiting on them to dry now:fishing:

Remove the K&N and replace with OEM filter or if you want to go with an aftermarket? go with Afe drop-in. Or any type of drop in that doesn't require "OIL" to clean it.

PS: Is the intake you installed a drop in? or a CAI/SRI?

I think he hit the nail on the head. If you read your first post it looks like the problems started when you installed the K & N. I am sure somebody with a little more knowledge can chime in but they don't work well with our trucks.

check your throttle cable running from the cruise control to the throttle body. I moved it the other day to do something(i think i was changing PCV valve or something) and i had it in a bind and the idle jumped to 1500 rpm even with the engine warm. Maybe you moved it installing the intake

I'm putting everything back together right now its the cold air intake system not the drop in p.s. I had some oil in the throttle body and old intake I'm guessing a new motor? Anyways if it doesn't work this time I will install the original one on to see if there is any difference

So it did the same thing again! I started messing with it and when its accelarated I press back on the black spring thing that's tied on to the throttle with a nut it drops down to normal I will post up a pic of what it looks like

Its the circle looking thing its black and has a nut on the other end

I don't think this has anything to do with K&N intake. There is nothing wrong with a K&N CAI, when properly oiled and cleaned. I have been running one for 5+ years and I have 207,000 miles on my V6 97 4Runner.

Didn't the OP say he has no CAT? That is probably related to the problem.

Key word being, "Properly".

yes, it appears that black circle control is part of the issue. However, I don't know what that part is called or what it does. In fact, I don't recall having one on my 1999 4runner. I will take a look tonight and see if I have one on my truck...

yeah, looks like an idler valve of some sort for the 96-98 4runners as mine('00) doesn't have it.
