Problems Fueling Gas Tank

Hey Guys, I have a strange issue. I did try the search button btw.

Im having major issue fueling my 01 4Runner... At first I thought it was a particular pump at a particular station. I tried another pump and stations but they all do the same thing.

I start filling up and it stop after a couple gallons, I thought the angle might be wrong, I tried twisting the nozzle around, I tried pumping slower, tried pushing it in as far as I could, tried sticking only the tip in.... Nothing helps. It seems like the neck of the full tank isn't training correctly and if filling up causing the pump to stop... I never had this issue on a vehicle and need some advice....

Thanks for any help...
Dave

On most of the new vehicles that there is typically a restriction placed into the lines for fueling, in the event a vehicle rolls over. This prevents fuel from leaking all over and a horrific blaze. I looked at the schematic on TIS and didn't notice anything immediate that would prevent it, but I don't see a schematic for the filler pipe hose where I would expect such a blocking device. My guess would be that stopper is stuck.

Unless you just hit your head, are having a blond moment, a senior moment, (insert any other non PC term here) or something...I know I have had days like that.

No blonde moment... I just tried it today and its gettings worse... Any other suggestions???

All I can tell you is that if a fluid is not flowing in a pipe it can only be one of a couple of things. A blockage or the destination has a higher (or equal) static pressure (in this case) than the atmospheric. The gas tank is typically under pressure and vapors are recycled. But when you open the cap it is open to atmosphere...so I highly doubt it is anything that complicated.

I suspect a blockage...plugged? someone put something in the line? Either start taking stuff apart or take it to a shop. If you take stuff apart make sure there is always a grounded connection. Be safe if you work on this yourself.

I thought i was nuts because I needed gas and I could not put any in my 03. I got frustrated and went to a different station and it worked there. I turned the nozzle every way i could at the first place.

Wow, is there a solution to this?

I have a '97 Limitied which I'm almost certain has an 18 gallon tank. I was on "E" when I bought it 2 days ago, wen to fill it up and I only got 10 gallons out of the pump. I thought maybe the station was trying to ration gas or something.

I will try again tomorrow, but if anyone knows of a solution I'd like to know.

Thanks,
Jamie

Dave, did you ever find out the solution to your problem? I have an 01' 4runner that is having the same fueling problem at the gas station. Mine did the same thing it just started and then got worse. Thanks, Dylan

Actually it's a common issue apparently with the 3rd gen 4runners with the fueling problems at gas stations. I never figured out the actual problem but just a solution. One thing that I read and actually worked was flipping the head of the pump upside down. The fuel floes in normally. It worked! "

That may just be a safety system in your 4Runner, or the contacts on the fuel gauge are wearing out. I have an 04 with a 23 gallon tank, and when it hits E, I only have to fill up 17 gallons every time.
