Problems with 06 stereo using aux jack and sirius

If this has been addresed already I am sorry. So much came up on the search that I had a hard time getting through it.

My wife has an 06 4runner with the stock cd player with the aux jack in the center console from the factory. It plays an ipod great.

The problem is I installed a sirius plug and play unit and plugged it in at the aux jack for a direct connect. Now I get alot of alternator noise while the engine is running. Turn it off and it is crystal clear. Have gone so far as to try and get power from another source under dash and tried a few different aux cables with zero luck.

Is my only option to install the fm direct adapter from sirius? Anyone delt with this with a good solution?

Plug & play unit? Do you mean something like the Sportster 4 or 5?

If so, are you using the supplied cigarette lighter adapter to power it?

What quality of patch cable (from Sirius to Aux In port) are you using? They're not "all the same". I went through several trying to get my MP3 player to sound decent through the Aux In port and ended up having to buy 2 1/8" gold plated stereo jacks, some 3 conductor cable, and making my own before I ever got the sound quality I was looking for.

One source for engine whining in a sound system is unsheilded or poorly shielded (Radio Shack) patch cables, among other things.
 
will do! This has been an ongoing problem for a while. If I can not get it cleared up very soon I will be turning that unit off. Hopefully it ships tomorrow. I can not wait!!!

Fixing to to something with my 99 also. My starmate has been direct connected for year and a half in previous vehicle. Put it in my new to me 99 last week and the FM modulator is awfull!

I am trying to decide on an aftermarket deck with aux jack or doing the fm direct connect I mentioned doing on my wifes 06.
decisions, decisions!! I just want my sirius to be as crystal clear as it was in my last truck, but it was not a toyota!
 
I hooked up my myfi and got a VERY loud high pitch noise so I then hooked up my Audiovox Xpress and got a low buzzing noise when the 4runner is on and more so when I accelerate. It wasn't as bad as the myfi but still too annoying to deal with.

So I have been searching and googling for about 3 hours now trying to find a fix. The closest I could come up with was to get a fm switch and hardwire it directly to the fm antenna in the back the HU. I wasn't really interested in doing that.

I should have known to just start my search right here on T4R.ORG! One little search in the audio section and I have my solution in the 45 seconds! I just ordered the crutchfield ground loop noise isolator. From the reviews it seems like it is exactly what I need ... Hope it works. Will let yall know.
 
Well the part was on the porch yesterday and I had to put it in!! Well after having it a day I can say this thing is awesome!!! Wish I had known about this device a year ago!

That's great that it worked for you .. hope it does the same for me.

Also, I just realized you live in Charleston. I am from James Island. Good to see some lowcountry folks in here!
 
That's great it worked for you. Thanks actually go to Gromulus who hooked me up last year with this ground loop noise isolator.
 
If the vehicle is still under warranty, this issue may be resolved by a TSB. The TSB involves installing what amounts to a good noise filter inline with the AUX port. I first tried one of the filters that you're all using and found it to be only a marginal improvement. The Toyota noise filter is much better, IMO.

I had the TSB applied to both my wife's 07 RAV and my 07 4Runner. No cost to me for either vehicle. Check with your Toyota service dept.

I have seen this abbreviation a few times in here but what is a TSB exactly?

Technical Service Bulletin - TSBs are known issues with the vehicles that will be fixed for free under warranty, but only in response to a specific customer complaint. This is different from a recall because it's not a safety issue and Toyota isn't being compelled to fix anything by the federal government or their lawyers... :) Which also means that if you're out of warranty, you're out of luck.

Interestingly, there's a TSB for the blower motor icing up and failing to work under some conditions. I would think that's at least partly a safety issue... but their lawyers must not agree and so far the feds don't appear to be involved with that issue.

I see, thanks for the info. I see that some TSB's are referenced by their number, do you happen to know the number for this particular one?

They sometimes get supersceded by one another, but at one point TSB AU004-07 was applicable to 06-07 4Runners. If your dealer is reasonably competent, they'll be able to look it up themselves and you shouldn't need to provide that number. Just let them know what the problem is and let them know that you're aware of a TSB that addresses the issue and that you want them to apply it to your vehicle.

Here's the intro from the TSB documentation:

Some customers may notice noise in the auxiliary mode of the radio when using an MP3 player or other external audio source connected to the 12V power port of the vehicle. An improved auxiliary port and in-line filter has been developed to improve this condition. Use the repair procedure to install the new in-line filter and auxiliary port.

Just called the dealership ... taking it in next week for an 'inspection', whatever that means. I tapped into my existing 12v outlet and added one in my console, I hope that doesn't void the warranty or anything...

Just got back the dealership. The fix worked great, no more interference at all ... I just wish I would have done this BEFORE buying the the thing from Crutchfield. Oh well. The TSB # is TSB0067-08 for anyone interested.

Is this a problem only if you use the lighter socket to power your sat/mp3 player? I'm going to have my sirius starmate installed, and I was planning on having it wired to constant power.

Yes, I believe it is an issue when using aux port and 12v outlet at the same time.
