Problems with new truck

Hey all, just bought myself an automatic :( 1987 4Runner with a 22RE that was rebuilt last year, and already having a few problems with it.
Wouldn't pass smog because of timing, it was idling at 1100, so me and my brother-in-law lowered it. It now idles at 750 in Park, but cuts down to 500rpm in R/N/D and now struggles to start when cold.
I know there's a connection I have to jump when timing, but not sure where it's at exactly.
Also, it's running 31"s on stock gears, and I'm getting a HORRENDOUS 12MPG, that I would definitely like to raise.

If anyone could help steer me in the right direction with anything, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, everyone!

Are you getting any check engine lights?

As far as the running rough when it's cold issue, download the FSM at the top of the forum. Do a diagnostic check on your idle air control valve. That part plays a huge part on how your engine performs when cold.

The FSM will also tell which two terminals you need to connect to do the ignition timing.

Your bad gas mileage can be a number of things. In the EFI section there are tasks to test all of your EFI sensors. Test them and adjust as necessary. Also pull your o2 sensor and clean it. Your o2 sensor will tell your ECU if you're running rich or lean and can be a part of what is causing you to run rich and get bad gas mileage.

Get to know the FSM and read through it. If you want your runner to perform in tip top condition, you will use the heck out of the FSM.

Thanks for the heads up about the FSM! Too bad I just bought the Chitlons yesterday. -____-

No check engine lights, and the rough starting only started happening after we dropped the idle. I tried driving it that night after work and died after pulling out of my spot. If it's warm, no issues dying after initial start up.

That sounds like a cold start injector issue. But go through the FSM and check all of your EFI sensors. You could have one or more sensors that are giving you issues.

The diagnostic port should be on the drivers fender, there's two green or yellow plugs, you want the smaller one with two terminals in it. Short those terminals together with a piece of wire (I keep a paperclip wrapped around the wire harness so I don't lose it) to set your timing and idle, and to check for engine codes (do this even if your check engine light isn't on).

I can tell you from experience that an automatic isn't going to like turning 31s at stock gearing. It won't account for the entirety of your bad mileage but it sure as heck isn't helping. When you get a chance, regear to 4.88 (if you wheel) or go back to stock tires (if it's a street rig).
