how do I change my username (it was just 'given' to me; I didn't choose it)?

when I check my profile by clicking on my current username in a post, it lists my birthdate as 31 dec 1969. when I go to edit my profile, the correct date of 2 aug 1963 is listed - what's up with this?

another question - many times my IP address is banned when I try to access this site - why?
