Programming 02 key fob - question after reading threads

Hello all... I am having trouble programming a key fob I purchased on Ebay for my 02 4Runner.

After reading the link below from the archives... I tried it 3-4 times and couldn't make it work .. I just bought a new battery for the key fob, just in case the used one I bought has a dead battery... I haven't installed it yet..

The key fob I bought has some #'s on a sticky in the back, but the steps below didn't mention I needed them.. what gives?

Can someone lmk if the instructions below are valid for an '02 ?

Key Fob archive thread

1. unlock all of the doors in the car, open the driver's side door, and make sure the key is not in the ignition
2. put the key into the ignition and then pull it out without turning it or anything
3. within 40 seconds, lock and then unlock the doors five times using the power lock button on the driver's side door.
4. close the door and then open it again
5. within 40 seconds lock and then unlock the doors five times again using the power lock button.
6. Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the on position (not acc and not far enough to actually start the engine) and then back to the off position, then back to on and back to off.
7. Pull the key out of the ignition
8. If you are successful, after about 5 seconds, the doors should power lock and then unlock on their own. If that doesn't happen then try again from step 1.
9. within 40 seconds, hold down the lock and unlock button simultaneously on the remote for a second. Then release and hold down the unlock button for 3 seconds. The power locks should cycle again once on their own. If they don't cycle exactly once, repeat this step from the beginning with the remote again.
10. Repeat step 9 for every remote you want to program. You have to do this with any remotes that were previously programmed because this process essentially resets what remotes the car will respond to.
11. Close the driver's side door to signify that you are done programming the remotes

The process you listed is the same one I followed to successfully program remotes for my 02. Turn your remote over and look for the FCC ID stamped on the back. There seem to be 2 that work for the Runners, this is what I have found.

FCC-ID w/ VIP security system - HYQ1512Y
FCC-ID w/o security system - HYQ12BAN

Hmm, things aren't looking good ..

The remote (no alarm) came with a sticky on the back with T-W12Y , which is not any of the two you mentioned

I have never heard of that particular number working on a 4Runner. Does the remote have the third button for the rear window? Not the trunk button, but an actual window button that shows a window going down.

I have no idea what that sticker is for, but looking closer at the remote the following # is on the back:
FCC-ID w/ VIP security system -
HYQ1512Y , So, I guess I do have the right one, but how the heck does one know if I have a VIP security system or does it matter?

I believe it does matter if you have the security or not. I wrecked my 00 Runner with the VIP system, so I just kept the remotes. I tried to program them for my 02 Runner w/o the VIP and they wouldn't work. As soon as I got the HYQ12BAN it worked fine.

If you have the alarm it may have a small sticker on the drivers window that says VIP security, or a small red light to the left of the steering column, should blink when you lock it up. Or just put the windows down and lock the truck with the key, then pull the lock up by hand and open the door, that should trigger the alarm if you have one.

Well, something is wrong with my truck I think... I tried programming it and I can't even get to the step of pressing the key fob ..

One of the first steps is lock / unlock 5 times... by the forth time the driver's side door lock doesn't lock, the rest do... wtf? Any ideas?
