Project 1Ton "build thread" Many Pic's!

Most people build their rigs to go any play. It seems like you build them to break?

j/k. Get your runner going reliably and come to moab with us in October!

and it just keeps getting better. Not only was #6 blown out, but i have a cam with 2 lobes going flat and 3 bad roller lifters. That's just the valve train. I still need to tear off the bottom end and see what the bearing look like. I took some pic's, ill post them up later.

and how y'all see me. :violin:

Didn't you just build that motor? Do you know what caused the damage? That sux dude, hopefully you can get back up and going soon!

I built it in '10, but i built it for max power instead of streetability. Basically i put a circle track engine in a 4runner. Not exactly meant to be ran more than once a week.

I just tore it all the way down, pulled the pistons and crank. Bearings are garbage, piston skirts have too much wear. My main cause for wear was solid roller lifters and high compression.

i only went back a couple pages, but i am in shock you busted up a TH400 like that. what happened?

Not one but two. When you put something ultra badass in front of something pretty badass. The ultra badass is going to win. Plus i had some clearance issues, should be golden once i get the engine back together.

What do you do when your 383 wears out? You build a 385.

Luckily none of the bearings spun, it was only a matter of time though. Cam and lifters are garbage, block is getting bored .010 over and a fresh set of pistons. Should be back together once the wife says ok.

This time its going to be more low end torque but more streetable.

Hey Nate, I know where you can get a nice, streetable 350 that won't blow up everything behind it (LOL)! Just kiddddding. Sorry about the beast getting lunched like that--I know that's gotta tick you off. Hope you get her back up and rolling soon, buddy! As one other mentioned, that would be sweet if you could make the Moab trip--I'd love to see your monster in action (of course, we'd probably end up goading each other into breaking both our rigs on some impossible obstacle!).

I'll buy a plane ticket to come watch the monsters battle it out lol.

Well I got everything back together and Bob I now hate you. Apparently you fixing your "overheating" issue has now given me one. I have 2 coolant sensors, one for the gauge and one for the live data on the EFI. They both read hot. I have a 160* thermostat in it and I shut it down at 210. After having our conversation about IR heat guns, I hit mine. My brand new thermostat is stuck closed. Did I mention i hate you. Other than that the EFI is still very much in the learning stages. It is getting better every time I run it though. At first it would die after WOT, still needs to get some more drive time in to really settle it in. I love it though. I hop in, tap the starter and it fires right up. When its cold it idles up. Its pretty rich when it first fires but clears right up after about 3-5 seconds. Also I dont use nearly as much fuel. I think it will pay for itself over time in the fuel ill save. Anyways just wanted to give an update. I am going to bump up to a bigger stall on the torque converter. It seems alittle sluggish right off idle.

One more thing I had to cut out my motor mounts to get the new headers to work. They have a lot more room now, just need to get it cleaned up. Go figure, I order the same headers in a different tube pattern and they were way off. They even said they use the same jig as they always have. Nothing a little cutting and spicing didn't take care of.

Sorry about that, chief (LOL)! I have no doubt you'll get yours running properly soon. I took mine out wheeling yesterday for the first time in a while, and it behaved itself all day, with nothing worse than 210 in high-stress situations (and cooling right back down after). Mostly it sits between 190 and 200 now. Can't wait to get these together on the trails!

Changed the thermostat and is still overheating. I have never had a SBC overheat in a toyota. I have the right pulleys, a good pump, new thermostat (twice), fan is blowing plenty of air, radiator is plenty big. Im pretty much fed up with this thing. Honest to god thinking about parting it out and get a couple of side x sides. I wouldnt mind working on it if i actually got to use it once in a while. Everytime I turn around it's something else.

I totally understand the frustration, Nate, and wish I knew what direction to point you in. What has changed from your old set-up? Isn't it all the same except for the injection? Could the radiator be clogged? I know when I pulled my first thermostat, I found it had shifted and turned cockeyed in the housing. Since I had used the provided cardboard gasket that time, I bought one of Mr. Gasket's reusable gaskets to help hold it in place. I assume you confirmed the temp with the gun, and not just with the gauge. Best of luck, buddy--I'd hate for you to get rid of the monster!
