projection headlights for 3rd gen

anyone thought of doing a project for putting projection headlights on the 3rd gen t4r's? i just thought of it. im not gonna do it but i jus wanted to see if it could actually be done and how it would look

It's been done. They look awesome but they are really hard to do. There's all this about baking the housing to tear it apart and then putting in the projector just right. Then you have to aim it correctly. End of the day, it's a project I could not do.

Having said this, I will be going HID very soon but just ballasts and bulbs.

at first, i planned to do it too. i know it's possible. almost everything is possible if you put your mind to it. but i'm currently trying to do an LED mod for the tail light. which i can't find a good price on a pair of tail light.

but don't you need projectors if you get HIDs anyways? i thought the projectors makes the light beam as a 'glare' so it won't blind someone. i guess it's for a sharper cutoff lightbeam. hmm!

i'm sure it's pretty much the way it looks. bake the lights so the clear lens come off. install the bracket of the projector into place and aim it correctly. and cover up the borders of the projectors. and that should be it. but if you do, you should buy a new set of headlights to try it out. because i'm sure this process will takes weeks and maybe a month to do. if i have enough money, i'll soon to do this project also.

Pretty much what he said. I know on yotatech, there are pics of progress but I'm not sure if there's a write-up per se.

As far as needing projectors, you don't. The newer front housings on the 3rd gens work pretty well if you aim correctly. Since many here are lifted, aim should be lower than stock or you will blind people in front of you.

question! was it hard to put in? i'm sure it's a plug-and-play but the bulb socket fits into the OEM?

It was really easy to put it. It was a direct fit. Everything was perfect. no drilling, no splicing, no nothing. realy easy,. it took about 1.5 hours. here's a picof what it looks like on low beam at night. sorry about the low quality pic, i don't have a digital camera

both my headlights are luminics brand... hyper whites and jdm yellow fogs

do you mean when u start ur car and turn on ur headlights the lights flash for a while ? im not sure im understanding ur question

how expensive were your bulbs?

about the xenons, have you ever seen xenons being turned on? its like they cut on then they have to warm up for a second and they get brighter, kind of like lights on a tennis court or in a gymnasium. Make any sense?

they werent expensive at all... about 25-30 each....

and about the lights getting brighter... i know what your talking about but im not sure about them if they get brighter after a while... i never really checked or payed any attention to it.... however.... when i turn on my lights before i start my 4r... i have noticed that my headlights get brighter once i start the engine....

you will blind the crap out of everyone on the road with glare unless you have some sort of shield on there, aka the casper shield, i modified mine to not let glare out. if you can see the capsule of the bulb from outside the headlight housing, that is glare escaping.

The flash you're talking about is the like a spark plug. It takes approx. 20,000 Volts for a spark to jump the spark plug gap, and maybe only 8000-10000 to keep sparking. So for the HID's it takes "X" about of energy for the light to turn on. After it's turned on, it takes less energy to make it stay on. What you will notice is that after the HID's are turned on, they get brighter adn brighter for about 2 minutes. THis is jsut so that gas inside the bulb has time to wark up. in my HID kit, when i first turnthemon, the lights are really white adn after they warm up, they turn slightly blue. You can actually notice the colour change if you're against a wall

Yes thats exatly what im talking about. Im not at all in the position to be doing an HID kit now, i just dropped $200 on the 99' - 02' headlights

i'm still researching more about HIDs. from what i heard is, denso is the best one for ballasts. don't get those aftermarket ones which cost about 200. it'll burn out quick. as for the bulbs, some bulbs might not fit on the headlight socket so gotta make sure it does.

so when you do the HID conversion its different headlights correct, or does the conversion take place inside the stock 4runner headlights?
