Proper oil level when changed?

I did a search and actually found some info here and on YTF. It seems some people find that 5.5 quarts does the trick (with a new filter) and some take up to 6 quarts to get it full. But that's not my question. My question is "what is considered full?". I put 5.5 in, ran it a few minutes, let it drain down a few minutes, and checked the level. It was closer to the bottom bead on the stick than the top. I added about 1/4 quart more and now it's a little more than half way between the beads. I'm used to dipsticks that say "add" and "okay" or "fill" or whatever on them. Is the proper level between the two beads or is "full" considered to be right at the top bead?

Oh, it's the V6 by the way...

On all my vehicles I fill up to just below the top full mark. Haven't had any engine problems yet. I also tend to run some Lucas Oil Stabilizer every 3 or 4 oil changes.

at work, we get the oil level to the top dot. its never less than 5.75 quarts and most of the time it takes 6. for me, i like it right at the top dot, but being a little under should be no problem.

Not really overthinking it. It is either full or it isnt. Just trying to figure out how to know for sure. Its a simple question but apparently not a simple answer.

It's a simple question and a simple answer. Like you say, it's either full or it isn't. Full is between the dots (Full could be anywhere between 5.5 and 6 quarts, or maybe 5.2 -6.2 qts, it's something like that). They build in a range so you don't have to be super exact in measuring this out. That's what the dots are there for. They show the range that is "full"

I'm not trying to be critical here, but this really is incredibly simple (it's designed to be incredibly simple). Every car made in the last 70 years has been basically the same for this: full is between the marks on the dipstick. Maybe the marks are dots, maybe it is an area of knurling, it doesn't matter, just go between the marks. It's what Toyota wants you to do.

I usually just make sure I am somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 of the way between the dots, usually closer to 3/4.

Ive always been under the impression that you want the oil level at the "full" dot. Ive done this with all my trucks. If I see its lower than that, I add more until its reached the FULL line/dot.

You want to stay between the dots. If you are aiming for the top dot and you overshoot it, then you may be overfilling. Overfilling can result in frothing in the oil which can cause serious problems it own.

I agree. Don't overfill and you will be fine. Stay between and all is well. Also remember to check it regularly.

This is really the only kind of answer this question required. I dont think the question was over-thought, but some of the reponses certainly were.

Thank you volley and the few others that just tried to answer without any extra editorial.

I second that the question and some of the responses were over thought. As I've always understood it, anything below the bottom dot, and it needs more oil. Anything above the top dot and you've over filled it. It's not really rocket science and wouldn't really matter one way or the other, assuming you're "close" meaning within a 1/16th either way. It's kinda like driving - keep it between the lines and you're doing it right. Stray over the line and you're doing it wrong.

The only way to be absolutely certain is to get an external oil gauge installed on the block/oilpan. The factory dipstick is just not accurate enough no matter how you read it.

I put in 5.6 quarts in mine.. I used an ratio cup to measure out the last .6 quart (18 oz) and it sits in the middle of the dip stick.. book says '5.5 quarts with filter change'

The only kind of answer this question required? That isn't an answer, it's just what he does (no offense to you Volley, there's nothing wrong with sharing what you do). There is zero reasoning behind it. You show me somewhere where Toyota says to fill between 1/2 and 3/4 between the dots and I will admit that I was wrong, but you won't find that. If they wanted you to do that, then they would have put the marks at 1/2 and 3/4.

I provided the explanation for why the dots are where they are, and why overfilling and filling right to the top dot can be dangerous and added actual knowledge to this thread instead of just stating what I do without any reasoning for it, then agreeing that that is the correct way to do it. If you disagree with what I said, then by all means, explain why, but provide some actual information, not just opinion.

Don't think I was trying to give you attitude or "editorial". You were making an oil change into something far more complicated and not understanding the design. Having crap like that up here is only going to confuse newbies as they will read this thread and think they HAVE top fill between 1/2 and 3/4 between the dots, or right up the top dot and that just isn't true, and can be risky if you miss.

Please don't take correction as "editorial". I am trying to answer your question with the answer Toyota would give, and give the reason why the answer is what it is. If you think I am wrong, then by all means, ask Toyota. Or even ask a dealer's service department, though they aren't always in line with Toyota either.

Ive tried reasoning with him before, its not gonna happen man.

BTW, T4R_Finally, that's 2 threads and counting on just doing a freaking oil change.. and you were doing so well with the whole not starting unnecessary threads thing. Back to square one I guess.

And I did give a perfect answer to your query, I told you to read the manual. It tells you exactly how much TOYOTA says to put in..
