Proper Tire for a Wicked Road Trip

So I'm driving from Alaska to Texas in November and I was hoping I could get some suggestions for a tire that balances braking ability, comfort, fuel efficiency, and of course can handle the trails.

Input much appreciated and I do know how the search bar works, not what I'm looking for though.

geolanders are going to be a great all around tire
ltx ms is going to be a great road tire. Ive taken mine off road and they did everything I asked them to do?

Are you moving to Texas?
Man you are going to see it all. Go through and stop in Moab if you get a chance.

Any decent HT or AT tire will do fine. But wait a couple of months and you may need good AT tires just to reach Oregon.
 
My favorite AT tire is Bridgestone Revos LT.....I have had 4 sets in a row on 3 different 4Runners. Goodyear Duratracs and BFG AT are two other sets you might look at. I had some Geolanders on my 3rd Generation a few years back and they road like a covered wagon. Wore them out and put Revos on. Better in snow/rain and on the road. Sticky as hell.
 
The BFGoodrich All Terrain KO are probably the best tire out there for sidewall and rock resistance. It really depends on the load you are carrying also - if you are not to loaded then most AT tires are going to give you good service on the trip from Alaska to the states. The biggest issue is rock and pothole damage potential.
Going from the biggest state to 2nd biggest is a real trip!
 
i might suggest the new BFG Rugged Terrains. they are real nice all around tire. i have heard nothing but good reviews by people who have them and sell them.

i have the KO's and if you are going to do that much driving have a spare account for the gas because you will be able to watch your gas gave move fairly quickly.

if the trails are light then the michelin ms2's or the at2's would be a good choice. their warranty, low noise, wear like iron and the gas mileage difference might be something to consider.
 
You just have to figure what kind of tire you're really going to need offroad. If there isn't anything really challenging (mud, big rocks, etc.) then I would look into the Michelin LTX. Rides really nice and you will probably get over 70,000 out of them.
 
The Alcan Highway in Alaska is no longer a dirt road but it still has some sections with potholes. You no longer need a 4x4 to do this trip and in the summer it is full of motorhomes. If you wait much longer snow will close the roads. If you are actually looking to find places to off road on the way then get a good a/t tire.

Yea, my wife and I are moving to San Antonio. We're going to be doing the Alaska Canadian Highway, then shooting west to visit family in Washington, down the coast to San Francisco then east through AZ & NM. It's gonna be one hell of a trip.
 
Sounds like fun and a good move to boot. If you'll be loaded with stuff take that into consideration and I'd say focus on a good road tire first and off-road second. While not really popular you should take a look at Goodyear Silent Armor which would meet all your needs though it's a heavy tire.
 
I'm not sure what others think, but I would take a hard look at the Cooper Discoverer AT3 and/or the Toyo Open Country A/T as more aggressive options. Michelin LTX and the Bridgestone Revo's are also great as all-around tires. I'm not sure what would perform best in the snow...best on the highway would likely be the LTX's or Revo's. Enjoy the trip!
 
I've been running Cooper tires on my trucks for 20+ years...GREAT tires...And far far cheaper then the Michelins. I currently have the Cooper Discovery CTS...I've had not complaints with the Coopers I've used...All lasted 60k+ miles...and excellent ride..and performed as well or better then any tire I've ever owned....And compared to the Michelins(which are excellent tires also)..they were at least 20% cheaper.
 
Aw man what a sweet trip! The farthest road trip i ever did was from Texas to Glacier National Park. At least you've got family you can stay with on the way because yours is a multi-day trip! I just finished a road trip in my runner from texas to Moab utah then back http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/96609-just-finished-3-000-mile-road-trip-southern-utah.html. The drive out in west texas will let you know how big this state is (and that part is pretty boring). I got BFG Radial longs since 2009 and i like them but will probably upgrade to the BFG all terrain or rugged terrain. These tires seem to last a while and i hear good things about them and they look/perform nice. Also if you're moving are you towing a uhaul or something? Good luck!
 
So I've opted for the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 2 - 265/70/17 of course.

This trip is gonna be sweet cause both my wife and I are traveling on military orders so it will be almost entirely covered by the DoD. I'll be sure to take plenty of pics of the 4R along the way... pics will prolly be posted in December. Thanks again for everyone's insight!

I was going to second the motion on the Silent Armors, but noticed that you've already decided on another nice tire!
