I just got my 4Runner and didn't really like the chrome badges so I plasti dipped them. I had no experience with it and first tried to tape off just the badges which didn't go so well. When I tried to take the tape off, it peeled the plasti dip off the badges. I had to re-do it all and the second time, I taped off about two inches from the badges.

** Tip: Right after you spray on the plasti dip, use a tooth pick and go around the edges of the badges BEFORE it dries. When it does dry, it makes it SOOOO much easier to peel off!! The plasti dip peels off the truck paint very easily and leaves no mark.

Of course you love it! You own a 5th gen & it's the #1 mod in the 5th gen forum! hahahahahahahahahahh:humble:

I’ve used plastidip from wheels, to emblems, metal bumpers, items in my backyard. Through multiple Colorado winters, hail storms, it holds thru. Best part is, when you want to change - it peels right off if you originally sprayed a few good layers. You’ll be surprised by how well the quality is if done correctly, it’s all about the prep.

i'v plasti-dipped entire vehicles (WRX and a Charger) both lasted years and still going strong. even scraped a garage door with the charger and although there was evidence on the dip, when I pulled the dip off to inspect the car's bumper, there was no damage at all. just sprayed some more on and was good to go.

DipYourCar makes a spray solution that will smooth out the rough texture you get just after spraying it on. it actually comes out quite smooth. they also make gloss dips that work well too.

I hate plastidip. If you want something black, paint it with a high quality spray paint.

Very much agreed. I don't usually care what anyone drives but when I see a new/newish (under 5 yr old) bmw/benz in flat black, I don't get why that is "attractive" to Anyone. But whatever....I love a good old fashioned sharp/clear reflective shine, yea. Now breath. :cowboy:

Nothing wrong with being critical if you like nice cars. I can appreciate it on the right car. Plus there's a difference when someone gets vinyl wrap or a proper spray. My friend has a 991 GT3 RS in matte grey. I wouldn't have it any other way. Even the TRD Bro 5th gen crowd can pull it off well. Now when I see a 3rd gen with a BS dip job, it looks like a salvage title filled with bondo. I start hearing 1877kars4kids in my head. These things are so old that it either looks like patina or trash.

The rattlecan Truck Bed Liner worked great on my tube front and rear bumpers. Several coats but no chips or flaking

If you're trying to freshen up something that was already flat/semi gloss black, sure go ahead and spray paint it with some trim paint or something, but not plastidip, the stuff is trash, I've used it, it sprays like shit, lays out like shit and the end product looks like shit, if not right after you're done it will a few months after.

If you're thinking of painting over factory chrome, or worse yet, factory paint (especially good factory paint). Please, don't. If you want the base model flat black trim look, buy a base model, these trucks are extremely good looking with nice factory paint, especially on limiteds and sport editions where everything came in a nice finish from the factory.

I think the rattle can is the go to tool because people see the sheer amount of time and money it takes to make a 4runner as fresh and clean as some of the members on here and settle for just making it "different" instead of "better". Just don't do it. Have patience.

Think out every mod and do it right the first time around. Trust me. I went through it all with my 4runner. 5 years in I've got thousands of hours and dollars into the thing, it's blown up and cobbled together, I'm going to have to start over to get it where I want it to be now that I actually know.

I've been reading up on this product a little and am unsure of exactly how it works or what it's best for.

Is it true you can spray it over plastic and metal and it will only stick to the plastic parts? IE- bare plastic sr5 fender flares but not the paint around them?

I just ordered a new oem front bumper and was planning on spray painting the lower apprin w/ black spray paint, rubberized coating, truck bedliner, or plastidip. Would Plastidip be appropriate for this?

What is the best process for using plastidip on emblems?

I've used Plasti-Dip on the lower valence of my old Audi A4 and had no issues with peeling or chipping. You just need to make sure as always the surface is clean and that you take your time to build up layers. You want it thick. IT's easier to remove if it is think. Otherwise if you change your mind and want to remove it, it will be very difficult.

I'm going to have to side with UnderFire on this one. The previous owner of my 1999 decided to plasti-dip the entire vehicle. He did a very shit job of it. It is a pain to get off and looks like hell.

If I were to paint a vehicle that really needed to be painted, I would get some enamel and use a roller. When thinned properly the enamel will self level.

After reading the thread, I feel pretty confident that it would work on the chrome trim pieces on my 2011 SR5 Premium.

I've deleted the running boards, and I wanna keep the emblems and rear valences chrome, but these pieces on my bumpers and below my doors gotta go.

Anyone have any experience painting these pieces?

clean the areas, and go on with light coats and you will be fine.
