Pull me back from the edge!

So I'm in process prepping and painting my HD-SKO sliders. My big plans are to get 285s on 4" backspace wheels and regear to 4.88s. But sliders first. Naturally additional armor is planned, too, but not in the near future.

I'm currently running a SS 7.2 lift and 265/75 tires on LX450 rims. Naturally, I have no rubbing issues. But bigger meats are calling me.

I got thinking about the sequence of steps in my build. My chief concern is rubbing with the 285s. OK, a body lift would fix that. But then I should put a body lift on before I weld the sliders. And if I do a body lift I'll want to raise my bumper. So that means I may as well get a front bumper first, too. Now my near term plans are getting expensive and complicated. It was all so simple when I was just going to do sliders, then gears, then 285s with 4" bs.

It boils down to rubbing. I don't mind trimming the front bumper a tad. The pinch weld is what I'm trying to avoid. I'm also not a fan of body lifts and would like to skip it. Am I needlessly hyperventilating over the issue of NOT doing a body lift, getting 285s with 4" bs, just welding up my sliders as it sits now? I absolutely do not want to have to remove the sliders in the future to reposition them if I do need a body lift.

Should I just get a life and be prepared to tweak the pinch weld? Should I get the 285s w 4" bs and see if I have an issue or not? I'm looking for cooler heads to send me down the right path to nirvana. What are the logical steps that allow me to do it right the first time?

Many thanks,

Honestly I dont think youll need the body lift with 285s all you need to do is take a BFH to the pinch weld

I'm in the same exact boat as you right now as well. I have sliders, but deciding if I want to put a body lift on. Basically a body lift will make it easy to not rub and will be very helpful if you ever plan on going to 35's. Tons of people use no body lift and don't really rub at all or very little. It all really depends on how much trimming and pounding you want to do. It's really not a big deal to flatten out the pinch weld and won't hinder or hurt anything by doing so.

4" backspacing will definitely clear the 285's, but so will 4.5". It also depends on the tire as some are wider or have more pronounced sidewalls.

Lets see some pics of your 4runner. LX450's FTMFW!!!

I'll get some pics. Nothing all that special, relative to the builds I've seen. I will remain silent on the issues I had and the solution I came to to get them to fit over the Tundra brakes. A big oops, but I made it work.

FWIW, I'm leaning heavily toward General Grabber AT2 tires. Not sure how that may or may not rub. I like my Firestone Destination AT tires, but with 285s they only come in load range E, which I'm not too thrilled about.

I'll probably use the LX450 wheels if I get 255/85 tires for more serious bidness.

Thanks for the input on the pinch weld. I guess I'll get over it and not sweat the body lift.

I have 285s on 3" lift with 4.1" BS wheels. and I don't rub AT ALL. Just went to moab and still not a second of rubbing.

The main thing is the front bumper ends trimming and replacing the bolts in the rear wheel wells. Check my build thread out on that one. This post here, towards the bottom: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-g...nner-build-photo-timeline-34.html#post1069489

On the pinch welds. The only thing you have to do is hammer it down a little bit. The little part of plastic that covers it in the back of the front wheel wells.
