pulling the plug

Hi everyone! Sorry that I've been absent for so long, I got a new job in another state and haven't had much time to focus on the 4runner. It's been serving me well and I drove it from SLC, UT to San Diego, CA and I've taken it on a short road trip to the Grand Canyon while visiting relatives in AZ.

I have an '88 v6 and recently had the belt to the alternator burn and snap on me. I took it in to the nearest pepboys shop I could get to since it was late and I don't have the time or space to really mess things up properly. They're saying a pulley seized up and found the root cause to be timing problems which may or may not be related to a cracked head gasket. Their estimate to repair everything is a little shy of $5k.

It looks like it's probably time to rebuild/replace the engine (it has about 258k miles) or just scrap the vehicle completely. There's enough rust on the truck that continuing with expensive repairs isn't practical.

They fixed the belt and say that it runs now but very poorly. I asked them to hold off on any major work. But, I've already started pricing other 1st gen 4runners in San Diego (on craigslist) and in Utah (on ksl.com) and I've found a nice 87 with relatively low mileage (~125K, asking $6500) and a beautiful 88 v6 (~224k miles, asking $6900). Both have original paint with minimal rust.

So, I'm curious to get some opinions on what a reasonable price would be for a clean mostly original 1st gen. Also curious to get some ideas on what to do with the beloved rust bucket. I'd like to strip it down a bit before handing it over to a junkyard, but I don't have a place to store it in CA. Any input would be appreciated, thanks.

Honestly, if it's running poorly and the rust is too bad to make it worth repairing, it won't be worth much.

I don't remember, is this the truck you brought over that one time? I don't remember it being in that bad a shape at the time.
