Pumping Fuel into 04 4runner

OK heres a question, why is it that everytime I go to fill the runner especially at a sunoco station the pump constantly kicks off. I usually use sunoco but i believe at mobil it is better.
Does this happen to anyone else?

What happens is the pump/shut-off is designed to stop when the gas reaches the nozzle. Sometimes the vacating air is trapped and kicks it off or the shut-off mechanism is too sensitive.

Probably the design of their pumps. As Koz mentioned. their auto shut-off mechanism may be set too sensitive. I now use only Shell, never had that problem.

In some states, gas stations are required to use vapor recovery hoses on their pumps. You can usually identify them by the way that they look-- thick, black hoses with a ribbed outer surface.

These hoses are designed to capture the gasoline vapors and return them to the storage tank. Unfortunately, when people "top off" their gas tanks, they force these hoses to fill with liquid fuel. When that happens, they tend to kick off even if your tank is not full.

Does that make any sense?

I found the solution while back. Just slow the flow down a click and it'll stay on, just takes longer to fill.

Get your gas at WalMart...no problems, and it's cheap!! and my Runner loves it!

I believe it has to do only with how fast a pump is set too. I notice that at some service stations the pump is faster in fuel delivery than others, and on rare occasions when I'm travelling and not near home, a fast pump will cause to much splashing and cavitation at the nozle, and the auto-shot off device will trip.

I know it's the pump because I shove my fuel filler cap under the handle so I won't have to hold it for several minutes of fueling. My "home" station seems slower than a lot of others that I have tried.

Happens all the time with different nozzle/vehicle combinations. We've got an Esso station in town with really senstive nozzles that trip very easily. I go there about 3 times a day with varying vehicles and some fill easier than others.

I am in NY also and have this problem alot, but my solution is just to not put the nozzle all the way down in the gas tank. I am not talking leaving the thing to stream through the air or anything, but just half of the available nozzle in the tank instead of all of it. It works every time and even when it gets full and kicks the pump off, it never overflows.

It seems to me that the pump is pushing the gas too fast for the narrow intake hose to handle. Did the same thing on my last vehicle too, a 1995 Rodeo.

It happens to me to but not at Sunoco. Mine happens at Raceway and Wawa. It is so annoying because you have to get out each time and reposition it. One time, I had to stand out there and hold the thing down. I thought there was something wrong with my truck!!

It also helps if you don't shove the nozzle all the way down the filler neck...

The gas stations do no maintenance on the nozzles until the break. That is why some work and others don't.
