Purchased T1809 Scion Radio - Installation Issues

So I have heard a lot of good things about the T1809 Scion radio as a plug-and-play replacement for the 4Runner. I finally get one on Ebay for a good price, and come to find out it's not compatible w/ my 4Runner because of the JBL stereo aparently. Here is a pic. The Original Junk Toyota radio is up top, the T1809 on bottom.

Does anyone know if there is an adapter for this? :redbrick::redbrick::redbrick::redbrick::redbrick:

I think you need a wire harness. Try looking it up either in your local car stereo shop or online.

thanks for the tips guys. I have done a bit more searching on this, and it seems some people have done it, but it seems overly complicated.

You will need two wiring harnesses to get a Scion HU to work in a JBL equipped 4Runner.

This harness will allow you to plug in the OEM JBL harness into the little black box. The device utilizes the stock JBL system with the new HU.

Next, you will need this harness. Metra 71-1761 (met-711761) Reverse Wiring Harness for Select 1987 This harness will plug into the back of the Scion HU. Basically, all you have to do after that is match and crimp wires.

I'm not quite sure why everyone makes this seem like a hard thing to do.

I wish that OEM manufacturers would not add "premium" sound systems to vehicles. Sure, they are slightly better than the alternative but that isn't saying much. Plus, even the "slightly better" moniker is garbage compared to even the cheapest of the aftermarket offerings.

Are you sure it's the same SIZE as your JBL unit? I've found that the SR5 & JBL radio's are not physically the same size, and that you may need the dash radio-bezel from an SR5 to get it to fit properly... ??? I'm currently running into this on a similar endeavor.

Another reason to dislike OEM manufacturers.

I believe the size on the JBL is physically larger than that of the standard Double Din openings. When I put in my new HU, an Eclipse Double Din, I had to use an adapter to make the opening fit flush with everything else. It has been a while but from what I remember, the JBL unit is wider and thus needed two small plastic side "panels" to mate up to the 4Runner's dash opening. Strange but it doesnt look all that bad. Both peices actually attach directly to the new HU.

I bought the HU form Sonic Electronix (sp?). With my order, they gave me some store credit to add any parts I might need. I had them include both those plastic pieces and another harness in case I wanted to use a non-JBL OEM HU. I am sure Crutchfield could do the same.

Any other opinions form those who have done this? Those of us who have the JBL system have it kindof rough as there isn't too much info out there on doing the conversion.

Another thought is the Tacoma guys. They run JBL systems as well and have a bit more support. I'll try to find the company when I get home.
