Well, i've decided to keep the 4runner!!! and as a result have been getting some work done!
First off, a HUGE thanks to t4r4life!!! I hired him to come do a ton of work and walk me through it on the rear end of my car. Today we finished a damn near complete rebuild of the rear under section of the car! A huge thanks to bigfishallday for his amazing rear seal write up, i cant even tell you how invaluable this information is a 4runner noob like myself! made my life ton easier!
My 4runner was saggin in back after i had the recall rear springs installed a few months ago, big mistake. also, the rear seal was leaking badly on the drivers side, both bearings were shot to hell and the rear brakes were freezing up very badly, making the car almost undriveable. i like to do things while im at it, so my runner just got new:
-OEM Axle seals
-OEM Rear bearings
-OEM Rear brake shoes
-Cooper Rear brake shoe hardware
-OEM Everything else involved, gaskets, spacers, etc.
-Stoptech SS rear brake line
-Bilstein rear shocks for the tundra
-Performance Products Rear springs
-Kaaz high performance JDM LSD fluid in the rear end, 80w-90
my total cost on parts from toyota was just under $445, i bought but didnt use the skid sensors and was able to return them, a huige thanks to Allen Yip in the parts department of Concord Toyota, he hooked me up with great prices and let me bring back the abs sensors!!!
I also pent $7.99 at o'rielly for a cooper rear brake hardware kit. this includes all new spings, retainers, rubber plugs, etc. its a great deal, toyota didnt even have the parts and wanted much more, just pick one of these up and you will be totally set, wont have to worry about misplacing one tiny already used piece.
i paid $200 for the machine shop to do the bearing assembaly and all.
i paid $400 to t4r4life for his time. i am more than happy to pay this money to a fellow who needs it than three times this to a dealership who doesnt care. this also included the rear suspension and ss brake line install.
I paid $250 for the bilsteins and PP springs.
i also pent about $200 on tools and stuff for the job. I bought a brake bleeder, seal driver kit, seal puller, shop rags, foam pads to work on, 6 cans of brake cleaner, drum brake tool kit, etc, etc. some if it was for the job, a lot was parts i needed so its a good investment.
Toyota quoted me $2000 for the rear seals, bearings and brakes. the new price for the suspension plus the typical shps install rate around here would have run me about $1k, so about $3k worth of work that i was able to make happen for half that, even with paying someone to do the majority of it. Not bad i'd say!
