Putting down a pet ....sucks

I'm going Saturday 9/6 at noon to put one of my cats down. She has been a good pal to me and if I was messin around out in the garage with the truck or detailing a car for someone she always had to be there with me I alwayus had to open the door to the 4R so she could climb up inside and would sit on the seat and just hang out until I was done.

When I was gone working at night she would always be standing in front of the door waiting for me.

I know to most non pet owners or dog lovers or cat haters this is a stupid thread , but for me it's a sad day . After 18 years and 4 days of having an unconditional loving pal it's just a hard thing to do.

She will be missed , RIP Tiger girl You have been wonderful !!!

I still have Smoke who is a 2 y/o female . They both have been pretty quiet the last 2 days , like they know or something..... weird.

All this for my cats , and I am a total dog person , but to me a pet is a member of my family no matter what kind.

I feel for you.......I hope all goes well for you and the loss of the family member. my GF runs a animal hospital here and i get attached to so many animals.....We have a few of them....some old some young and 2 years ago was my dogs time.....This damn cat attached itself to me at the same time we had to put my dog down....I love all animals but the cat somehow knew what was going on....things work out at the strangest time.....this cat is my new dog.....it has all the same traits as my dog. Crazy how things work out....

Does it seem to be in pain? In other words, is there a reason you are putting it down, rather than letting it go, say, in it's sleep?

I'm so sorry to hear that. 18+ years is a pretty good run.

Day before yesterday I had to take my retired PA state police homicide detectives 23 year old Cockapoo dog and have her put down. He and his wife are still shaken. He's one of the roughest, toughest, old school type detective characters and it hurt him bad.

For many of us pets become family members. As family members they sometimes out do their human counter parts They always love you, they don't give you any crap and they're always happy to see you. I have yet to get home late and have a pet rip me a new one.

Science is gradually proving the bond is far more real than initially thought by science (on both sides, human and pet). There's no question good cats and dogs dramatically enhance the quality of our lives and they're worthy of our devotion and our sense of loss when they leave us. Their devotion to us is 100%.

I feel for ya, and don't think anything about what you are going through is "stupid" at all. Anyone who has had a furry companion understands totally.

I lost a 13-year-old Black Lab back on 2007. She was ill, but we did not think it was yet her "time to go" and the vet had just told us to keep any eye on her and to bring her in if she were sluggish for more than two days in a row. Well, she was sluggish for one day and died in her sleep sometime during the night. She was curled up under her favorite shrub next to the fence. What a gentle & loving girl she was!

My other Black Lab - a large male - turned 13 back in July and is still doing relatively well. He is 90% deaf now and has some pain in his right-rear hip; but is otherwise normal. He won't fetch anymore, but still has great muscle tone and all of his "wimpy" personality and is friendly to everyone.

We all know that he is on "borrowed time" and has outlived his normal life expectancy, but think he's still going to be around for awhile. When that time comes, I think I can deal with it - but there will be a lot of sadness.

You're not alone, and just know that you had lots of good memories (and time will heal the wounds) of 'hanging out' with your feline friend.

Josh , thank you. I have kept her going for a long time. She is a diabetic and have given her insulin every morning for the last 8 years , she has thyroid problems and give her a pill , for that. Over the last year she seems to be getting demented and pee's in the house instead of her box. Her back legs are starting to get weak and she's wobbly.

Well I have to go for now , she has about an hour left before we go. She seems to know for some reason , so does the young cat . They have been acting quiet for a few days .

You're absolutely right -- it's one of the hardest decisions you'll ever make, but it's better to do it a bit early than to try to hag on and have the pet suffer further. You're doing the right thing, painful though it is.

Just try to keep smiling about all the good times you had with her.

This is a very meaningful thread to me. Thanks for having the openness and courage to start it. I don't feel so alone in what I went through with Matee our cat in 2004 now......He had cancer in his mouth and as he could not eat I took him to see the ocean just before I put him down. I am still vexed by the loss.

He asked for nothing and gave his loyalty and friendship in return. A true friend.

Sorry to hear about your cat. Even though I don't have a pet, I can only imagine that feeling. It must be one of the worst things you will ever have to do in your life. Unfortunately, euthanasia is sometimes the most humane thing you can do for a suffering animal even though it hurts. Remember that you ARE doing what is best for the cat.

Well today is done. She is gone . It was so fricking tough and emotional day and many more to come I'm sure. My emotions are so drained it's not even funny . I hope the other young one will be ok , I'll keep an eye on her and give her extra attention.

She gave me such joy and happiness in my life. Unconditional love !!

I miss her terribly !!!
